Gilligan (1982) argued that an "ethic of care" led individuals from "a focus on self-interest to moral reasoning based on commitment to specific individuals and relationships, and then...[to] care for all people" (Woolfolk 2019, p. 109). This resource provides lesson plans on issues like racism, immigration, discrimination, etc., that allow students to explore historical and contemporary events from a place of empathy.

This would integrate well into a unit on Chinese culture.

Students go through the simulation and have to make decisions together about the journey. Nel Noddings (1995) "urged that 'themes of care' be used to organize the curriculum" (Woolfolk 2019, p. 109). Adolescents need opportunities to think beyond themselves. Developing an "ethic of care" as proposed by Gilligan (1982) helps students consider the lives of those around them. This game helps students take perspective and make decisions based on their own set of understandings and see how those translate to the situation of a person in a very different situation than their own.

Subject Area - Recess/Physical Education
Age - Grade K-12
Cost - $12.02

Many psychologists believe that play allows "children to experiment safely...solve problems...and adapt to new situations" (Woolfolk 2019, p. 76). Woolfolk (2019) suggests that both Piaget and Vygotsky would agree that play provides stimulation that helps children's brains develop. Allowing time for physical play is crucial for middle school students. Unfortunately, many schools begin to cut back on play time to make room for more academic time (Woolfolk 2019, p. 77). Recess games like soccer are beneficial for students physical and social development.

Adolescents are in a stage of identify vs. role confusion in which they try to make sense of their personal identity and how that impacts their choices and decisions. The game above takes students through an activity in which they consider the values they hold most important, allowing them to increase their awareness about themselves as they navigate this time period in search of identity.
