Exit Transition

When it is time to pack up and go home, teacher starts the clean-up routine and students get ready to finish the lesson. Once everyone is ready, they all come back to the carpet for the exit routine. If there are any announcements for the next day or any reminders to take home, teacher goes through these. Then the teacher tells the students that şt is time to go home but before they leave the carpet, they respond to some questions the teacher asks. These could be anything they have covered during the day, such as new sounds, addition facts, or simply if they are wearing something blue they can go and get ready, then students with green, etc.

Transition from homeroom class to gym (or other specialist's class).

When students hear the bell and the teacher says 'PE time' (or 'Art time'/'Music time')students know is time to get ready to go the gym (or other specialist's class).
Students stand up, get their water bottle from the water bottle station (at one corner of the room) and line up in front of the door or a specific line up area outside of the class: they should line up according to a specific line order assigned by the teacher or agreed with students. The line order might also change every week. With younger students (PreK or K)they should put one hand on the shoulder of the student in front of them. The teacher makes sure everybody is in the line (he/she might say something like 'show me a good line') and raises a hand to request silence. Once students are in a good and quiet line, teacher leads them in the hallway to the gym (or other specialist's class). Before entering the door of the specialist's class, the teacher again requests a good and quiet line. Specialist teacher welcomes them in at the door.

* Students know that it is time to clean up when the meditation bell rings promoting the end of the activity and that they should start cleaning up together with the clean-up song. Teacher sings the song and students sing along.
* Students clean-up to a song and when they finish cleaning-up, they get to dance until the end of the song. They are self- motivated to clean-up fast in order to be able to dance before the song ends.

Transition Between Activities

* Using a meditation bell to mark the end of an activity. When I ring the bell students know it is time to stop what they are doing and listen to the next instruction. Once students are given the prompt about what they need to do next, I allow them enough time to be able to transition to the next activity. I use fruit and vegetable names for differentiated groups so if they are working in their differentiated group, I tell them which table or room they need to go to and what materials they need to bring. After we practice enough times and students have mastered the routine of transition, I decrease the number of prompts and expect students to be able to self monitor. I make sure and reinforce positive behaviour and add some kind of movement at times by asking them to move like an animal for instance.

Work to Lunch Transition:

The meditation bell dings signaling it is time to get ready for lunch.

Students quietly (not silently) begin to tidy up their work. This looks like putting materials back on the shelves or putting finished work on the "finished" shelf or drying rack if they are working on a wet project.

The teacher and assistant are present and redirecting students who may be unclear on what to do.

When work is put away students go and wash their hands in the in-classroom washroom.

Students go from the washroom to the dish-shelf and get a plate, cup, cutlery (this can take a few trips as students use two hands to carry plates/cups)

Students sit at their assigned lunch table and wait for the teacher to call their name to be served food.

For the first few weeks of school the classroom teaching assistants model this behaviour and quietly whisper reminders to students who need redirection. Modeling from the teacher is crucial as it gives visual cues for the non-english speakers about what the expectations are.
