Identify a challenge or problem for students to solve where they have to use a certain set of Maths skills. Make sure to identify which type of Maths skills are required by the students. </description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I teach in a Primary school, last year I teach in a 5th class. I used a real work with my students.&nbsp;<br>My project about the use of Maths in the real world : asking students to organize a trip through three Italy's regions. They have to calculate the costs of the trip from Rome to Aosta. from Aosta to Milan, from Milan to Verona and from Verona to Rome. They have to calcilate the costs of hoterls, restaurants, tichets for museum, castles, for tour guides, too.&nbsp;<br>Maths skills of these project:<br>-Money<br>-Read and understand the instruction<br>-Research on Internet<br>-Making calculations&nbsp;<br>-release a brochure<br>-Present the project<br>I think it would be a funny and engaging experience. This is a way showing my students how they are surrounded by Math every day. Pratical activities stimulates the students and bring them to reflection.<br>I think this is a good and useful way to approach Maths&nbsp; and improve students' skills.</div>]]></description>

It requires a lot of preparation from the teacher but the pupils really enjoy these types of lessons. <br>Team work, group work and mentoring are all vital. <br>Projects are my favourite type of work.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Well, this is a huge approach that last more than one lesson, I  usually ask them something linked to a real task: if you are 19 and I want to form 4 group how many students in each group? Or, during a science demonstration about density: once we have measured the mass and the volume what we have to do with the two of them? Or also, during a module about food and calories, we apply all the formulas to calculate the amount of calories per day, we analyse if the amount of food is enough regarding the sports done, the age, the sex etc.Each real approach is for a lesson, at least two hours, and they usually work in group.</div>]]></description>

I wait the obvious with a rocket . So we will start our travel . Small teams of 5 pupils , work at paper , painting  their travel .Earth moon , rockets . <br>After I will asking to make the same , with geometry shapes ,with flat shapes at first , they will use the triangles , circles , squares and rectangles I will insist to be carefull  for the sizes  of earth moon and rockets .<br>The next step will be to make the same in three dimensions , they will use ,sphere, cube, pyramid, cone, cylinder and parallelepiped .<br>At the final presentation the will have to explain how they made their 3D constructions and named  the shapes that they used and why .          <description><![CDATA[<pre>I always try to connect every new math’s topic with real life (adapting recipes to the number of guests, deriving the height of a statue using the shadows, estimate the number of kilometers that can be done with a certain amount of gasoline,compare prices, ...), but I’ve never used PBL and I’m a little disoriented and scared about it in math (not so much in science). It’s strange but I have less problem to imagine a PBL at the primary school or at the high “technical or professional” school. It’s hard to me to imagine a real PBL in math at kind of high school we call “liceo” and at the middle school. For the first time this year  6th and 7th grade’s students have to solve a “real problem” using all subject (it’s what in Italy is called “compito di realtà”). The problem chosen by some colleges for everyone is “how would you improve a part/monument/flowerbed/… of the town?”. Perhaps I can try to develop it a PBL.But I don’t have many ideas if not to compare costs and choose the best offer</pre><div><br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Happy Pi Day<br><br>Pbl is a very challenging activity for teachers, and a very rewarding experience for students.<br>I think it can be more effective if shared by other teachers of class.</div><div>Teacher must establish a clear plan of action, prepare activities, organizing working groups, set clear objectives, preparing boards and tools, to predict the evolution of the situation, share rubric.</div><div>I believe that I will propose to my students to organize activities for p day involving all students of school: they will prepare flyers, will write some article, will make apple pie and biscuits, will build items for sale. They will making analysis of costs and benefits, estimate the quantity, make proportions and relationships.</div><div>Sure it's a good challenge.</div><div><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In my opinion, "Translate" math in real situation can appear difficult but is easier than how people can imagine. In everyday there's math.. today, for example, while my student with handicap was boring while she was doing some operations, i have said: "if you go in a shop to buy a make up palette of 36 euro and you have 58 euros in your wallet, how much&nbsp; money do you have after shopping?" With this simply question the attention of my student is becoming very high. For the other excercise she has said me abot a real situation... 45-17=... "i want buy a scarf for you".<br>I have sometimes used PBL: to do a pizza, creating some compensative instrument such the robot of operations or the hand to count, asking of a real problem (we have 12 colours and i take really 12 colours. We give them at 3 students. Wow many colours to everyone? )</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>&nbsp;What came in my mind riding what my collegues previosly wrote is "planning a school trip". I think this could be a project involving different subjects, not just math. I would work in groups of 3-4 people in a 8th grade class. Every group has to chose an italian town (we do not go abroad with such young students), find the accomodation and the activities (museums, natural parks, theatres, etc.) they would like to do. They would use the computer for this activity so their IT abilities will be challenged. They would have to respect a budget so they would have to make choice based on the cost of the accomodation, transportation and activities. They would have to study the itinerary using their geometry ability, they would have to find the best and less expensive (in terms of money and fatigue) to visit the town. Maybe the litarature teacher could use this work to make them study the geography of the region or the history of the town and its monuments.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>One of the projects that I developed with my students was linked to health and had to evaluate some parameters of the class students (heart rate, weight, height, body mass index). In addition to having to build the instruments for registration, they had to deal with, from a statistical point of view, the collected data, build charts that illustrate the information and disclose all the conclusions they had reached.
<br>I have no doubt that learning were very meaningful to students.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div> Do PBL as in the video is difficult and require time with some experiences. Last year I did a project in my math class - students created survey (they had to have at least 10 questions) and they investigated the answers and they evaluated their questions. Students worked in the group by 3 people and they had to compromise on topic. They developed comminication, collaboration skills a lot, time-managment and math skills too because results of question had to be presented in percentage and diagram. They could use ICT tools.​ </div>]]></description>

I have personally tried a few of the projects on this site and find them very good. My students also liked them and even students who are not very "mathematically thinking" were working on those projects with good results.          <description><![CDATA[<div>I'm running math research workshops: working in small groups, the students look for mathematical solutions and do computer modelling for a problem/ research topic launched by researchers in the field of ‘hard’ sciences. The students’ activity is facilitated by myself and supported by a professional researcher. After the research activities proper are over, the students seek opportunities to share the results they have found – for instance, in scientific conferences for students, students’ congresses, etc. In addition, the students write research report articles in which they share the research topic, how they approached the solution to the problem and the results they found. For example, here is one of the topics: "In a tower with 10 floors (0, 1, 2, ... 10), you must develop a 4 lifts management algorithm that minimizes the residents’ latency.<br>Initially we can assume that people arrive randomly in the day to order a lift.<br>- It goes down or goes up one floor in 3 seconds.<br>- Each stop at a floor lasts 15 seconds."<br>In the video, it can be seen the students presentations in the Math Forum we have organized in our school (last school year)</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>I think that PBL is a very challenging experience for teachers, and a very involving activity for students. But in High Schools not all&nbsp; topics can be (and must be)&nbsp; performed with this methodology.&nbsp;</strong></div><div><strong>Students should do both activities they like both more theoretical activities that they dislike because they must be ready to face the work&nbsp; where they cannot&nbsp; do always what they want or they like. The first is the University that in Italy is very theoretical.&nbsp;</strong></div><div><strong>I think teachers should change activities in their lessons by including PBL but also more boring activities.</strong></div><div><strong>An interesting PBL activity is exploring the volume of solids using&nbsp; Cavalieri’ s Principle. Given that the pupils often find difficulties with the displacement of the point, I am preparing a laboratory where they have to materially build quantities 10, 100 and 1000 times bigger than that given. First I try with coins. I will give them the amount of € 1.27 (for example), and I will ask them to multiply by 10, 100 and 1000 and show their reasoning. It may be a drawing, a chart or other.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Last year I had a 4th grade: one of the pupils once asked why tv news are always bad ones, so I seized the time :) and proposed them a survey on tv evening news.<br>They had to do research, watching different tv news and recording the kind of news and whether it was "good" or "bad" or "neutral" (and what is good/bad!) and we transformed all these data in graphs. We tried to understand them and draw conclusions. Then I invited the local RAI tv director to discuss the research and answering pupils' curiosities.<br>A very stimulating work!</div>]]></description>

Pupils had to choose the activities, the places to visit, organize the time, the transports, calculates the cost of the single activity. They had to make decision about what they thought to be more interesting (each museums, visiting a journalistic writing, make interviews and so on. They had to organize the time e the transferts using maps, calculating the time they need. To sum up, they have to ipotize the cost of the trip, the food etc. At the end they made a brochure to show what the wanted to do. It was a great experience!          <description><![CDATA[<div>&nbsp;PBL is a very effective way to stimulate and enforce skills such as planning as well to be able to share ideas and strategies. It gives the students a big motivation to learn and apply the Math formulas, applying them to real life situations, and a sense of accomplishment when they realize a “product”. Several years ago, I assigned my fifth graders students, divided in groups, the project to display with pie-charts the percentages related to the different types of transportation used by all the pupils of the school. They had to do a survey, collect the data, calculate fractions and percentages, apply geometry. Each group displayed their work on a large poster board and also made a power point presentation.<br><br></div>]]></description>

I was thinking that if students were given the opportunity to refurbish a small area inside the school maybe repainting the walls, making new curtains and carpet, this means they have to measure using appropriate instruments. Then work out the costing and if they want to actually do<br>&nbsp;the project the students could think ways how to raise funds.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I teach in a Mediterranean country, Greece. As you know the refugees is a common daily reality that countries have to face. Last year in an etwinning project we studied with our Italian partner the monthly information from <strong>UNHCR </strong>about the <strong>refugees' arrivals</strong> in our countries, compare the monthly numbers for Greece and Italy, studying <strong>statistic, charts, graphs</strong>, created videos,&nbsp; search for historical similar events for each country and&nbsp; make their final presentation.&nbsp; It was a real problem which challenge our students to solve and deal with timeliness. They have to use a certain set of Maths skills, as we mentioned above, and also made clear to students that we can use math to understand everything that happens around us, evaluate the information,take decisions and finally&nbsp; form our&nbsp; personal opinion about events as European citizens.&nbsp;<br>Watch my students' video&nbsp;<br>about refugees.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In the end of a math course where we studied percentages we did this project with my students where they had to implement what they had learned during the course.&nbsp;<br><br></div><div>The students had to imagine their lives when they are 30 - what would be their profession, who would be their spouse, would they have children, where would they live etc.. They had to calculate the taxes, mortgage loan, incomes, outcomes and much more.&nbsp;<br><br></div><div>The students did really like the project. They said that is was fun to do something different in math class and they also liked the link to real life.<br><br></div><div>I still wonder if you could learn the topics only with this project.. Now we used 6 weeks to study percentages and one week to do the project.<br><br></div><div><br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In PBL, students have the opportunity to connect math with other subjects (physics, economics, architecture etc) and with problems of the everyday life.</div><div>Some ideas that can be applied to teaching math this way are:</div><ul><li>Photograph and paint 2 or 3-dimentional shapes that we encounter in nature or in human constructions. Students learn about symmetry, similarity and use the properties of Euklidian and solid geometry.</li><li>Measurement of a high building or tree can be done as an outdoor activity, using similarity and Thales theorem. Can be combined with history class as an opportunity to search information about Thales and the way he measured the hight of the pyramid of Cheops in 7th century b.C.&nbsp;</li><li>Measurement of the perimeter of earth as Eratosthenis did around 240 b.C. Students learn about the method that he used, they use the properties of circle, similarity, geographic properties of earth and then try to measure themselves the perimeter. This can be done in collaboration with the geography class.&nbsp;</li><li>Bee’s cells and geometry. Why do bees choose the hexagon shape to construct their cells? Using geometry properties of basic shapes, students learn to calculate areas and question themselves about nature and mathematics.</li></ul>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>This May, two of my fellow colleagues and I set up the project of building 3D fractal Menger Sponge. The idea was to engage as many students as possible in order to mark "May, month of mathematics". The fractal itself was built from business cards by origami technique (no cutting and no gluing) There were more than 400 students involved,&nbsp; contributing in various ways - collecting cards,&nbsp; folding cards, building the basic cubes, joining cubes into a fractal , exploring the properties of the fractal, measuring and calculating its volume and area etc. It was nice to see 9th, 11th and 12th grade students enjoying their time together. Since some students joined later, more experienced ones were teaching them the best techniques for building the Sponge. I also embedded the topic in our regular 11th grade curriculum - students should find the area and the volume when n goes to infinity, that is a limit of a geometric sequence and geometric series. Finally, students picked up all their research and presented&nbsp; their project at the end of May.</div>]]></description>

Once I gave my students the planimetry of the floor where their classroom is and I asked them to identify it and, considering the scale drawing, to calculate its real area. I used the Archimedes's Stomachion to introduce the subject of fractions and I continued making connections to the stained glass windows of churches.          <description><![CDATA[<div>I love PBL! I remember that 10 years ago, when I hadn´t heard about this methodology, a new pavillon as a sport center was built in my school. We asked our students in Maths to design a map to optimize the lines to paint on the floor for the different sports: tennis, football, etc. It was a real work, with a jury composed by the PE Department and the principle. The students did a very serious work! Thank you for make me remind it! We should try another PBL like this. Here you´re our pavillon.&nbsp;<br>Anyway, sometimes it is difficult to find a significative question, a real one. That is to say, it doesn´t sound to Maths just from the beginning. Frequently we, teachers, adjust the PBL to our contents, and that is unfair, in my opinion.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>BPL will be the next challenge for me and my young students.<br>I think I will follow the main idea of the video: a project based on geometry skills. I will ask them to bring a shoes box. Pupils have to look around them and find the forms of the objects that are in our classroom. Then they have to build our classroom minature in 3D.<br>An other theme for a BPL could be "Organising the end school party". They have to calculate the quantity of goods and the amount of money we need to buy sweets, drinks, etc... considering parents too. Then they have to choose who buys what and spend money carefully. Finally, they have to move the desks in order to form square tables on which to place the goods. They must also draw and cut invitations. My pupils are 8 years old. At the end of this school year, I think they will be able enough to use the four operations in order to calculate how many things and how much money we will need for our party.</div>]]></description>

First I think we must start by letting teachers have time to think about their activities in class, at least in Portugal, unfortunately, we are losing too much time with papers and bureaucracy…<br>For instance, as lots of students have low financial knowledge we can explore the offers of loans and savings banks have searching their sites. Then, taking account of the variables that matter to set the conditions of a loan or saving, students can build simulators using Excel. They could determine the area of such complex polygons as oddly-shaped crop fields.
