         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li>On average, US officers spend around 21 weeks training before they are qualified to go on patrol (Horton).</li></ul><div><br></div><ul><li>Many other countries require officers to have a university degree - or equivalent - before joining the police, but in the US most forces just require the equivalent of a high-school diploma (Horton).</li></ul><div><br></div><ul><li>Police training requirements in more than 100 countries and found that the US had among the lowest, in terms of average hours required (Horton).</li></ul><div><br></div><ul><li>There are around 18,000 police agencies in the US, but with no national standards on training, procedures and timescales vary across the country (Horton).</li></ul><div><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li>Whites accounted for 71.5% of the 701,000 sworn local police officers in the United States in 2016, Bureau of Justice Statistics data show, compared to an estimated 60% of the population (Andrea).</li></ul><div><br></div><ul><li>African Americans account for 11.4% of local police forces, compared to around 13% of the population, a drop from 11.9% in 2013 (Andrea).</li></ul><div><br></div><ul><li>Department of Justice (DOJ) data shows that 90% of the police chiefs in local departments and 81% of supervisors above sergeant were white in 2016 - compared to 4% and 9% African American, respectively (Andrea).</li></ul><div><br></div><ul><li>There continues to be cases on a frequent basis where law enforcement has ties to white supremacist groups such as the&nbsp; “neo-Confederates” the KKK, the “skinheads” and far right malitas like the Proud Boys, and Three Percenters (German).</li></ul><div><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li>Officers use deadly force on a suspect they perceive to be an imminent threat of death or bodily harm to the officers or others. In training, police are told to use force until that person no longer presents a threat (Andrew).</li></ul><div><br></div><ul><li>When police believe a suspect could harm or kill them, they're usually trained to fire as many gunshots as it takes to bring that suspect down. Officers fire until they've terminated a threat (Andrew).</li></ul><div><br></div><ul><li>The European Convention on Human Rights allows police to use deadly force that is “absolutely necessary.” In contrast, police in the United States are permitted if they have a “reasonable belief” that their lives are in danger (Berger).</li></ul><div><br></div>]]></description>
