RTI-The Two Perspectives

IDEA Group: In this model, teachers screen all students to identify those who are at risk. The students are closely monitored while the teacher implements evidence-based interventions. Students who are not responsive to the interventions move on to Tier 2, where more targeted instruction is provided. Students who respond to Tier 2 will return to the general classroom instruction, while students who do not make progress progress to Tier 3 for evaluation.

NCLB Group: The NCLB idea puts a strong emphasis on early intervention, and strives to unite general education with special education. They believe that by holding all students to the same set of standards, they are "bridging the gap" and creating accountability for all groups of students.

Problem Solving (In General)

This seems like an obvious post to include, but I didn't want to breeze over the importance of problem solving in general. As the Friend & Cook (2017) text states, "Whatever your role as a professional educator, your day is spent solving problems" (p. 104). As teachers, it is so important that we not only model for our students how to effectively solve life's daily problems and be flexible, but also that we encourage and push our students to solve problems on their own. With any quarrel, struggle, or debate my students face, they know the first thing I will say to them is, "Problem solve!" I believe my students are better prepared for their future because of the emphasis I put on working together and overcoming adversity together.

REACTIVE vs. PROACTIVE Problem Solving

This photo depicts two problem solvers. The man on the left is faced with a problem he needs to react to with urgency, while the man on the right prevented the problem from happening by planning ahead and being proactive. Although not all problems are predictable, many issues in schools can be avoided by being a strong communicator, an open collaborator, and a diligent planner. Being proactive is a powerful way to prevent crises among your students, their parents, and your colleagues.
