Inspiration

This short film that was made by a horror photographer, Joshua Hoffline. it really inspired me on what our short film could be about. We notice a lot of suspense and long, a bit uncomfortable shots. He used his own daughter to act in his own film. The lighting and the setting are so beautiful.

Day 1 Filming

First day of filming: for this first shoot, we tried to get everything apart from the scenes in the attic scenes so that we could concentrate on the most complicated scenes during the second shoot. I think we had a bit of a rocky start but we managed to get through a fair amount. What was the most complicated was the reflection of the light in my bedroom window as the sun was setting. I also believe we were underprepared with the paperwork, with some of the production paperwork not being prepared at all. Next time I take part in a short film I'm going to be more prepared before the shoot with all the pre-production work.

Learning photoshop

In our short film, we chose to use pictures as a prop but someone needed to edit them so that there was first all an 90s look and I needed to add a figure in the background. It was really complicated but after playing around with photoshop and learning the basics of it I kind of got the hang of it and I managed to fit one in. I hit a bump in the road when my printer was not working and kept on jamming the pictures. I ended up going into a photo shop in bury and got them properly printed off so everything ended up okay :)

To create a prop in our film, we went around my house and garden to take pictures that would later on be edited with a filter and a shadow figure in the background. luckily I own a nice camera to make the photos even more authentic.

Synopsis and log line

After going back and forth of what our short film would actually be about, we ended up with this:

synopsis: its easy for a person who doesn't care about anything, to forget about the people that matter the most in the world. but for Hailey, a sweet girl in her late teens who has a lot to care about, forgetting the one person who matters the most in her world can be the most dangerous thing. In life, everyone fears being forgotten. In death, those who are forgotten can not do anything about it, or so it seems. After hailey is left alone by the ones she likes to call her friends, but deep down she knows that they never really liked her, she realises that she has forgotten her dead mother. She decides to go through her mother's old things in the attic. As she flicks through old photos, she notices an unsettling figure becoming more present in the photos.

logline: A girl finds herself rummaging through some of her dead mothers things, as she is looking through photos she notices something more and more disturbing.

Day 2 filming

this day was focused on finishing off the short film and then doing some reshoots of some shots that we had done the previous shoot that were not good enough to be used in the short film. In terms of camerawork, I could have done a bit better for the continuity, but overall I really enjoyed doing, pov shots and just doing handheld camerawork. I really believe that I am improving my knowledge in camerawork bit by bit and I would love to continue learning next year.

Costume

We kind of went back and forth for the costume because we wanted to use something that we already had in our closets. We needed two costumes: one for the pictures of the mum and one for the girl in the present day.

For the mum's costume, we decided to use as a base a bomber jacket like shown on top. luckily we already had multiple. We were kind of going for an 80s 90s vibe. we matched that with a pair of blue jeans as that was a popular item of clothing.

For Hailey's costume, we decided on something comfortable, as the context was that she was just at her house so wouldn't be wearing something too uncomfortable.

This was really helpful so that we could all be on the same page about the visuals of our short film. even though my drawing skills are not the best we all understood and it made the filming process smoother.

Overall feeling

For me, I believe that this film could have been way better if everyone was more invested. I did enjoy trying out different camera angles and the filming process was fun but we could have been more organised with the paperwork. With the editing, I got really frustrated because of continuity.
