"Statement of Competencies in English Expected of Freshmen" Just from reading this I get a gist of what this article will be about. I honestly think teachers expect too much of their new students because we all come from different backgrounds and schools. Even if there are regular state standards for all schools, every school teaches differently and sometimes don't get to cover every little thing.

"we believe that literacy skills serve as the foundation for greater equity." I guess I can see why knowing how to read and write in a language is important for everyone to be fair to one another, but I think there's more to it than just knowing literacy.

This is what i thought as well. It made me reflect on my reading and writing skills.

"their curiosity, their daring, their participation in intellectual discussions—are predicated upon their ability to convey their ideas clearly and to listen and respond to divergent views respectfully" I hand't realized that was a skill I learned in school, I thought it was just common sense to be curios, ask questions, and be respectful. I guess if your parent don't teach you, you'll be an ignorant human being.

"All students who enter college without having developed essential critical listening skills or who have not had ample practice speaking in large and small groups will find themselves disadvantaged." It's probably because we're all afraid to voice our opinions at first and a crowd intimidates us. I've had practice with that due to being President of Art Club.

"Students’ success in college has as much to do with their ability to find information as to recall it." It's like the difference between learning and memorizing. Learning means you will recall later, memorizing means you will forget later.

"we caution readers against seeing competency as mere lists or sets of discrete “skills.” Rather, we urge you to consider the contributions each makes to a larger, more holistic “competency” or “ability.” Well, If all we focused on was the now, we'd never even make it to the future.

We do it for our grade not because we want to. Most people are into other stuff not discussed in school. That's why Mr. Landon's class was fun because we got to read the book of our choice!

Don't get me wrong, I love to write, I've written several stories in the past. I understand that texts bring light to new ideas and connections, but I wouldn't go as far as to say that all our ideas are shaped by texts, Art is a great form of shaping ideas too,
