In order to achieve our mission and vision, it is necessary to follow certain values that are of utmost importance when talking about human rights, among which the following stand out:
- Empathy
- Equality
- Social Justice
It is essential for people to be aware that individuals behind bars are also human beings and deserve the same treatment and respect as any other individual, and empathy is one of the values that helps us realize that fact, on the other hand social justice allows us to have an objective point of view on the issue we are dealing with, in order to judge and treat in a fair manner to a person deprived of freedom and thus this person can enjoy the same rights as any other human being has, constantly promoting equality between individuals

The prisons in Costa Rica are known to be a major issue in the country because of the overcrowding, where some prisons have to operate with even two or three times of its capacity, which leads to human rights violations, such as lack of health care and education, inadequate nutrition and torture, because with that many dangerous people stuck in the same place it is obviously going to be impossible to give to all of them the basic needs and even though some people may think that criminals deserve to live like that, prisoners are people with rights too. You have to also take into account that there is no such thing as rehabilitation programs in the prisons, the whole time in prison is just straight hell, so when the criminals get out of prison, they have learnt how awful and painful it is to be in a place like that, some people think that actually works, when in reality these prisons are just creating people full of hate and when they get out of prison they don’t have a reason to change and be better, because that person felt forgotten by everyone, because in prison there is no such thing like peace, the rooms are crowded and nasty, the bathrooms cannot be even called bathrooms and the constant fear of getting harmed are just some situations that a prisoner suffers that are completely inhumane. Costa Rica have tried to solve this problem by raising the funding for the prison system, but the overcrowding remains because there is always going to be crime in the streets and the only way to solve this is by educating the young about the importance of values, it should not matter if the kid understands complex math or chemistry or biology, it is important that he knows that he is going to be a part of a society where we all want to prosper and live in peace.

The largest activist/organization that has spoken out on the matter is the Office of the Ombudsman. The Ombudsman’s Office considered in 2012 that Costa Rican prisons were “depositories of people,” alleging the inability of prisoners to access basic health, education and work services. They also commented on the deplorable conditions in which prisoners live, which facilitate the appearance of outbreaks of infections and diseases. Commenting that all these treatments restrict the opportunity to give prisoners the possibility of reintegration into society.

In a more recent case, the Ombudsman’s Office alleges about the degrading conditions of prisoners having to sleep next to the toilet. They also allege about how worrying Costa Rica’s judicial investigation mechanism is for its inability to find evidence, as this caused the same prosecutor’s office to extend pre-trial detention for prisoners without a sentence. They also spoke about how in many prisons convicted prisoners are mixed with prisoners without a sentence, which they consider a violation of human rights. An important fact they mention is that the constitution indicates that the only constitutional right that prisoners or detainees are affected by is freedom of movement.
