Setting classroom expectations on Day 1

Something I like to do to establish classroom management and the way in which I run my classroom and the expectations I have of my students is to give out a grade their first day/week back. I believe this shows the students right away that I am strict in the way that I run my room and shows them that I have high expectations of them and how they plan to present themselves in class. This will also show the students that I am not easing into the school year, but instead going right into business. There will always be learning objectives and expectations within the class. Something as simple as grading them on their behavior is not as easy for all students. This includes punctuality, preparedness, attitude, participation, and overall behavior. Setting this boundary on the first day/week will give students insight as to how I run my classroom, what they should expect of me, and what I should expect of them.
