Saints Alive, Michael Landy

The comparison of Landy’s creations to medieval relics and reliquaries could be pursued in other directions. Is there a parallel, for example, between contact with a saint that makes an object a relic, and Landy’s transformation of junk into art? (..) But the comparison bears most pressingly upon the tension in Landy’s work between presence embodied in material things and renunciation or loss. The medieval cult of relics and the use of reliquaries developed in large part as an answer to worshippers’ yearnings for close contact with the sacred and divine. Even as these relics and reliquaries established the presence of a holy person, however, they confronted viewers with absence. Medieval saints were embodied primarily as fragments: relics themselves were almost always bits of matter, and many reliquaries took the form of a body part, usually a head or arm. Encountering St. Yrieix’s gleaming face makes him present, but also makes us aware that the rest of his body is not here, just as his shining angelic visage reminds us that he now resides in heaven, not on earth. Landy’s saints, too, are fragmented material presences. Powerfully manifest through their scale and animation, they are also patently absent in their incomplete, mechanical nature.

This difference between the bodies of the innocent, repentant, and guilty can be clearly seen in Lucas Cranach’s woodcut, The Crucifixion (Please refer to Figure 2, p. 203). The middle figure, Jesus Christ, is in a serene position and seems to be unaffected by the pain he should be enduring. Jesus’ lack of emotion can be related back to his decision to use his suffering as a tool to create salvation and redemption for the children of God. The two thieves that flank Jesus’ sides on the other hand show varying amounts of distress and agony. While both of the thieves display the pain they are feeling in their faces and bodies, the one on Jesus’s right hand side is depicted in a more tranquil form because, according to Luke 23:39-43, one of the thieves repented for his sins while the other simply hurled insults at Jesus. Many early depictions of Jesus’ crucifixion draw attention to the positive message of resurrection instead of the physical realities of execution but in recent artistic portrayals, such as Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ, they focus more on Jesus being human and capable of suffering. This allows people to relate better to the sacrifice he endured for them. SB: this focus on suffering stems from the middle ages.

"One of the things that's unsettling about listening to music on the sound track that doesn't seem appropriate is that it blows the audience's boundaries away. You just don't know where or how far it will go. It heightens and twists the scene, making it funny or exciting -- or both -- when it really shouldn't be. So you should feel uncomfortable about it -- in a unique sort of way."
