Illinois provided more than 250,000 soldiers to the Union Army. Illinois provided more supplies than any other Union state except New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. Illinois was also active in manufacturing weapons and the supply of iron products. Illinois also had vast farmland which was good for supplying meat and grain for the army. Illinois also held Fort Defiance, and from there Ulysses S Grant and Union troops launched raids into Confederate territory such as Missouri, Kentucky and Tennessee. After the war Fort Defiance became a state park in Cairo, Illinois

The Civil war was caused by slavery, Abraham Lincoln, and succession. Illinois fought on both sides, with Southern Illinois joining the Confederacy, and most of Northern Illinois joining the Union. But, most of Illinois was Union. This topic is important because if it didn’t happen the world wouldn’t be what it is today. If Illinois didn’t help supply the Union with supplies, the Confederacy just might have won, and slavery might have existed now, or the United States wouldn’t be the United States, and the Confederacy might have been their own country.

The Civil War was one of the major wars of the United States. Due to the Civil War, we now have certain rights that are sacred, like striving to have everyone created equal. The Civil War also brought new weapons and technology. The creation of rifles over muskets, and the miniball. Most importantly, the Civil War ended slavery(thirteenth amendment), and the US didn't lose any land in the process. Besides that, women were now taking stands and participating in war. The Civil War also united the USA as one, rather than being the separated North and South. In all, the Civil War was a war that affected what the US is now, and thanks to Illinois and all the brave people that fought for the Union, we no longer have slavery, and people are no longer treated as property.

Letter to Ulysses S Grant:

In the following letter Abraham Lincoln thanks Major General Grant for all the work he did in winning the battle of Vicksburg.
My dear General

I do not remember that you and I ever met personally. I write this now as a grateful acknowledgment for the almost inestimable service you have done the country. I wish to say a word further. When you first reached the vicinity of Vicksburg, I thought you should do, what you finally did -- march the troops across the neck, run the batteries with the transports, and thus go below; and I never had any faith, except a general hope that you knew better than I, that the Yazoo Pass expedition, and the like, could succeed. When you got below, and took Port-Gibson, Grand Gulf, and vicinity, I thought you should go down the river and join Gen. Banks; and when you turned Northward East of the Big Black, I feared it was a mistake. I now wish to make the personal acknowledgment that you were right, and I was wrong.

Overall, Ulysses S Grant and Abraham Lincoln were some of the best people who walked the land of Illinois, and the soldiers of Illinois helped the Union win the war by their bravery and supplies they provided throughout the war. In this letter, President Lincoln is congratulating Ulysses S Grant for his victory at Vicksburg. Vicksburg was an important battle because the Union gained full control of the MIssissippi river, and cut the Confederates in two by isolating Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas from the rest of the Confederacy.
