Working on a Progression

In this model, the learning experience goes from the simpler task to the most complex one. The very first STEP is the SUBSTITUTION. Technology will replace an activity that previously was done using traditional classroom tools. So, for example: instead of using the board to copy a text, students may use Microsoft Word to copy the same text.

The second STAGE which is AGUMENTATION is a stage of imrpovement in the usage of technology. It is added the FUNCTIONALITY. So, for example: In a word processing document students are taught to use different tools such as the word count, thesaurus, and grammar checks.

These two stages are part of an ENHANCEMENT process of the learning experience.

The Last Two Steps

Transformation has begun! There is an opportunity for students to change their look and feel of what they perform. Here is when the use of technology makes the difference and catches student's attention.

So, the third step is MODIFICATION. For example: a collaborative story in a Google Doc so that peer editing and collaboration can happen anytime and anyplace. Perhaps even some pictures are added to the story or report that the students previously begun writing on Word.

The last stage, REDEFINITION. This stage focuses on the employment of new tasks, the students are the ownerships and they can make choices. For example: the can explore and choose new technological tools in order to give a jump outside the original design box. From the original text written on Word the students can jump into a picture book, a slide show, or even a movie. This stage has a particularity, that is, the audience could go beyond the school and include the community, state, county, or world.
