The Dutch first colonized South Africa in 1652 and Europeans colonized Africa around the late 1800s. The Dutch brought thousands South Africans back to the Cape Colony as slaves. European settlers also brought a variety of diseases with them including smallpox, measles, influenza, and malaria. Forced labor and risk of disease was a major disadvantage for South Africans but colonization gave Africans access to technology including guns, medicine, and transportation. The Europeans maintained control over firearms because advanced weapons were a sign of political control. South Africa gained independence in 1961.

The citizens of South Africa have always had a huge impact on economic growth whether it's starting their own business, farming, or inventing things that help with farming. Statistics in South Africa said that the economy grew 1.4 percent in October to December 2018, after expanding by a revised 2.6 percent in the third quarter. Farming, mining, and manufacturing are the main sources of income for South Africa. Farming recovered after a long drought. Farming expanded 7.9 percent in the quarter, manufacturing rose by about 4.5 percent, and mining dropped by 3.8 percent.

Colonization of South Africa had a huge impact on the people living there. Thousands of South Africans were forced into slave labor and shipped off to Britain. There was a high risk of disease because Europeans were bringing diseases that Africa didn’t have at the time like malaria, smallpox, and measles. Although colonization for South Africa was mostly a bad thing, there were some advantages. These advantages include technology, the spreading of religion, expansion of land, and discovery of natural resources in South Africa.

The Dutch settlement history in South Africa began in March of 1647 with a shipwreck of a Dutch ship called Nieuwe Haarlem. around 1652 a Dutch expedition of 90 settlers lead by Jan Van Riebeeck made the settlement near the Cape of Good Hope. The first British settlers came to South Africa in 1820 after the Napoleonic wars. Britain settlers colonized the Cape Colony because of an unemployment problem that caused them to migrate.
