After coming back from war things changed.  Teaching qualifications became were higher that what he had.  He became a farmer and raised a family.  However, he did not ever lose his love of words.  

I would say that the message is that even though your life does not come out how you wanted it to, you can still do and enjoy what you loved. And in this case Don Arturo loved to read and write. He judged his Abuelo because of his age and thinks that he was sad and lonely since he lost his wife and he was dying. We can learn a lot of different things from other generations. Abuelo's daughter begs and makes go her son Arturo to spend at least one hour with his Abuelo. 
I believe that hour spent with him has changed his thinking not only about this old man but also about other people of his generation. 
We can learn a lot from our grandparents and they can also learn from us. We should never judge people especially just because of their age. They lived at different times and we know nothing about they might be gone through.

Arturo Jr thought of his Abuelo as a sick, elderly man, who cant do much. Yet the essential question refers to learning from other generations.
