Yossarian stayed in the hospital much longer than was necessary (even though nothing was wrong, but he wouldn't tell the doctors that) just to avoid heading out on missions. He pulled out the intercom in his position in the plane purely with the intentions of cutting off communication to his team and forcing them to turn back around. Sex, in this book, is something without borders or rules or regulations (except for the odd deeming of chastity being a perversion) and it is encouraged that children partake in "erotic play" which may allude to masturbation or manual sex of sorts (groping). This is meant to be  a precursor for sex to be had later in life. Now, this does happen in our real world although it may not be talked about, but the freaky part isn't that it's happening or that it's being allowed, it's that it's being almost required of by adult supervisors. This is meant to make the reader perhaps a little uncomfortable; sexualization of children is never okay, but this is also meant to, in a way, humanize them in some way. It is often said that "sex is the closest one can get to another person", the ultimate form of intimacy (or at physically). It's made to be a bit artificial though since it is being used as a means of teasing the kids with a sense of freedom, that the only thing they could control was their sexuality, if that. Sexuality is not necessarily an emotional occurrence, but it can be and something unique to humans is their romanticization of sex and procreation. Sex becomes a symbol of love but of love that will never be attained.

Though he is not technically living on his own he is able to survive without his father.

He has fooled everyone into thinking he is deaf and mute, thinking it life would be easier that way.  But when McMurphy arrives, Bromden slowly finds himself becoming more than a dumb, deaf patient.  When cleaning he notes the smell of McMurphy is that of dirt and work.  Bromden thinks more of the outside world even gets up in the middle of the night to look at the world outside of the facility,  He also has not been seeing much fog, which we assume is either due to the medications or his mental illness.  This shows that he is more aware and in touch with reality.  All of this started with the admission of McMurphy.

As he progresses to reach an age where he is surely an adult, he is more independent and looking to dominate; Milkman no longer is looking to follow in his father's footsteps/ job and stands up to Macon when his actions are seen as too extreme by Milkman. Milkman also brings himself to his own lifestyle choices, and grows to be less reliable on others for cues. Also, Milkman grows to be more assertive and quick to assume. for Example, Guitar states he and Milkman are not the same, but are friends regardless. Milkman is not satisfied with this statement, and takes it in as a sign of betrayal from Guitar.

He went against every rule and did things his way. He was anti-Nurse and challenged her authority. During pool time, McMurphy was talking to a lifeguard about the time inside. The lifeguard said that in jail, they tell you the amount of time you have left. In a mental hospital, you'll never know and you can possibly be staying for the rest of your life. After that, McMurphy began to act right to avoid suspicion about his mental state so he could leave as soon as possible. He didn't fight with the Nurse anymore, he didn't hold any protests, and he minded his business.

This community in Gilead is very strict and tight-knit and with this quote you can see a more specific reason for that. The whole community is very carefully crafted, with such a precision that it's shocking. The hanging of the bodies of those who have committed crimes gives everyone living in the community a reason to stay in line. The community is ruled by fear under the guise of religion. This quote exemplifies that and enforces the idea of how this community stays so intact in a sense.

Since racism and segregation is prime during this time period, Grant,an African American male, is constantly biting his tongue when surrounded and addressed by white people. Also, when Jefferson is on trail, the jury comes to a very quick decision. Being that the jury consisted of all white males, they declared Jeff guilty and to serve the ultimate sentence, death by the electric chair. There is no doubt that the racism and prejudice during the novels setting impacted both Grant and Jefferson.

This quote takes on the perspective of the protagonist of the book, Offred, and this quote stood out to me, because it shows the significance of verbal or social interaction with other humans. Within previous chapters of the story, there have been many parts that had led off to the loss or lack of affection and love. For example, sex is no longer filled with desire, love, or lust. It is only for the purpose of breeding, like a business deal of some sort. There are no emotions put into it anymore like how sex was often perceived to be. With the lack of social interaction, Offred feels the urge to cry because she hasn't heard someone greet her or acknowledge her like a human being in such a long time. It really shows how strong and captivating words and social interaction could be for an individual. There are many moments within the story where Offred clings onto her old memories about her husband, in which she longs for his touch, his warmth, and the feeling of love once again.

Knowing that allows us to understand why the patients are in there and what type of treatment is given to them.This impacts the characters by having them always constantly being watched and having their behavior observed. An example or experience they have to go through is shock therapy. Which is a type of therapy that corrects the patients when they are not doing the correct response to a given situation.

Hog means fool, one who is childish and immature, but it is a symbol of disgust. Jefferson is the antagonist of the book, since he is nothing like Grant. Grant is supposed to turn this "hog" into a man, simply meaning an 18 year old boy to an 18 year old man before he dies.

He's talkative, unapologetic, combative, and at times, surprisingly thoughtful. He is the obvious catalyst for a change in the ward. He remained consistent until part 2 of the story, the section is where we begin to learn more about him. He likes painting and writes letters to an unknown person, revealing a milder side to him. We also see a change in his perceptive. He goes from a guy without a care in world, enjoying his stay at the ward to a person realizing that there's no guarantee he's getting out anytime soon. He has become more aware of the gravity of his situation, which makes him mellow.

Macon Dead being a wealthy African American who owns many houses does not like the fact that he cannot relate to the poor African Americans and does not want to be compared to them, but also can't relate to the rich Whites since he is African American. So this makes Macon Dead a ruthless and lonely person as he has no one to relate to. This also leads to Macon Dead viewing himself at a higher standard. 
In conclusion, the setting of "Song of Solomon" contradicts Macon Dead's wealth and status, and influences Macon Dead as a person and his beliefs.

In chapter 29 it is revealed that the quote that has been somewhat of a tool used to ground Offred and help her remember herself means 'Don't let the bastards grind you down.' This phrase in Latin was left by the previous handmaid, as Offred had expected. While it serves as a reminder to Offred to remain strong, it also tells her that the previous handmaid had learned this phrase from the Commander.  I chose this because I can agree with her. The people in her town punish her for her sin by using public shaming, but yet there are or may be others who have committed a sin like hers or just a sin in general. Then, the idea that can be argued is to why is Hester received a big of a punishment while others are kept in the dark. #569038

This quote was selected for its truth. Milkman is at a time where he is conflicted amongst who he can trust in his circle of family and friends. Guitar was previously states in the book to be the only one Milkman could truly trust. Having said that, it is a powerful move for the person with the most valuable insight in Milkman's life to tell him what Milkman is feeling. Milkman believes his family and friends are going crazy, but he is in the right state of mind. In reality, it is Milkman who has not developed his sense of direction and clarity.

In the books context, the reason why they begin to condition the "Children" in the beginning is to provide them with the knowledge they need to be able to accept the society they live in. Although it correlates with the book, it may also apply to our modern day societal beliefs, as we are raised in school to learn new words and expand our vocabulary to keep building on it later, but in order to do that we first must begin at the beginning, at the very bottom. The character has many traumatic moments and memories of when the past transitioned into the new political system.

But the day they visited the swimming pool McMurphy changed. After the swimming pool McMurphy was on his best behavior and tried not to irritate Nurse Ratched. He talked to the lifeguard and the lifeguard said that the mental hospital isn't like jail. You aren't just there for a certain amount of time then you get to leave. You are in a mental hospital until the nurse decides you are "cured" and good enough to leave. McMurphy wants to get out of there so he started to be on his best behavior.

This sentence perturbs me greatly. It was the 1960s and Ruth, the mother of the protagonist, Milkman, has just lost her father. We learn that after his death, Ruth was found naked in bed with the corpse of her father. The 60s were a progressive decade in comparison to the start of the century and to the century before that so it was a bit alarming to me for that to still occur. This does give us more insight into the peculiar character of Ruth. It was not the first account of odd behavior by her, such as when we learn that she breastfed her son out of pleasure until he was 13. It starts of with the Doctor committing suicide and jumping of the hospital building. The author describes the Doctor's "blue silk wings.." as he is on top of the hospital. There is also a woman singing "O Sugarman done fly away". This symbol of flying represents people and their attempt of trying to escape their terrible living situation in poverty. Flying is usually seen as something majestic but in this story it can be represented in a negative way to maybe represent people running away from their problems.
This symbol of flying in the beginning of the story sets the tone for the rest of the story.

Throughout the chapter it begins to explain how Pearl acts and grows up both as a baby and later on as a child. However it isn't until this quote that I was able to confirm that she actually loves the child rather than considering her as a burden to her life. I especially selected this quote as the name behind her child has such a deep meaning that only she may know and appreciate.

In the book, red signifies the handmaid's position in the new system. The women wear clothes in red to distinguish them apart from other women such as the Martha's. This quote peaked my interest out of all the things that I read because it shows some bit of individuality, individual desires. It's been stressed time and time again in this story that a person belongs to every other person and that everyone has a role to play in the creation of a perfect society, one opposite of ours where there is no use of frivolous hobbies and interests. This quote though, shows a sense of rebellion and angst. He doesn't want to comply with things but is rather forced. He doesn't want to fit in, and he doesn't want to be of use to anyone. He would rather be his own, useless person. Which I found profound and relatable.

As the story progresses, her feelings and thoughts proceed to become actions, which resulted with Offred sneaking into a rooms, carving words into the wall, stealing objects, and ultimately lusting for another man. Although she is aware of the rules and the consequences for breaking the rules, she overlooks them throughout the story and acts upon her impulsive thoughts.

I chose this quote because I think that it has a valid point, and is what the author wants to tell about the dark side of Puritanism. While all the townspeople were condemning Hester for her sin. which she took claim of with dignity, they themselves were also sinning as the saying from the bible goes "love thy neighbor as thyself." This is the irony that is presented in the quote which points out the fact that Hester's society is so adamant on being good and not sinning, however it is hypocritical of them to be putting her on display on a scaffold and publicly shaming her, which is a sin when they were not treating their neighbor as themselves. Religious as they were, their claim that her sin is bigger than theirs is not valid because the bible or similarities say that all sin are equal.

Before agreeing to teach Jefferson, Grant believed the lessons would be useless. By his fourth visitation, Grant still has a sense of negativity and doubt that the lessons are not being beneficial. Grant makes it seem like his time and energy is being wasted because Jefferson is bound to die with or without learning something.I believe both Grants and Jeffs negativity is holding them back from change because Grant doesn't care to teach and Jeff shows no real interest to learn.
