His attempt to comfort Ashima when she is crying in the mornings shows that he cares about her; however, his loss for words expresses the guilt he feels for marrying her and bringing her to Cambridge. Ashoke is on the phone talking to Rana and she tells him that Ashima's father has passed away. Ashoke then tells Ashima that her father has passed away. At the same time he tells her, he is caring and holding on to her. This shows that he is a caring and compassionate person.
