Hi All, Jess here!

I am a lover of all things nature. Being outdoors is my source of medicine, and has brought so much inner-healing. In my free time I enjoy gardening, reading, yoga/movement, traveling, attending live music events, spending time with family, camping, watching football, and just simply being in the outside.

I am a mother to 3 wonderful children, and spend a lot of time being a mom/doing all things mom related. I am married and just recently celebrated our 20th anniversary.

I am a LCSW, and recently started my own practice, Heartfelt Holistic Healing, where I provide individual and couples counseling. I also am a Psychology instructor, which I absolutely love, as teaching is a huge passion of mine.

Currently, I am enrolled in the Health & Wellness Coaching program, and plan to graduate in Spring 2024. I plan to continue my studies in yoga and energy healing in the future to be able to expand my overall practice. My overall goal one day is to have a healing center that encompasses all things wellness , and has an outdoor component to provide healing directly in nature.

Humans have been connected to nature since the beginning of time; humans and nature evolved together. 1000’s of years of evolutionary experience and humans bonding with other living organisms has been demonstrated throughout history within the field of science. Simply put, we have an affiliation with nature, whether we like it or not.

Since we have been immersed in nature since the beginning of man-kind, we know it is vital in keeping us emotionally, psychologically, and physically healthy. Nature encompasses and interconnects 3 human-centered components of health: physical, mental and social. Through this knowledge human’s interrelationship with the environment is emphasized (Seymour, 2016).

The concept of nature as a healing source has been around for 1000’s of years. Many ancient medical systems that have been around for 1000’s of years are built on nature-based approaches; one of these being Traditional Chinese Medicine. TCM is based on the belief that humans are interconnected to nature, and are profoundly affected by its forces (Weir, 2020).

There are a few key theories and concepts that support the connection between humans and nature, and the overall healing power that nature has. One of these is the Biophilia Hypothesis which suggests that since our ancestors evovled in the wild settings and relied on the environment for survival, we have an innate drive to connect with nature (Weir, 2020). The Stress Reduction Theory (SRT) suggests that spending time in nature triggers a physiological response that lowers our stress levels. It further has found that when we observe nature in any form, we experience positive feelings and emotions that have a restorative calming effect (Mental Health Foundation, 2021).

Mental health will impact 1 out of every 4 individuals throughout their life, which is an astonishing number that we cannot ignore. In the United States alone it is estimated that in a given year about 10% of adults will suffer from a depressive illness (depression, bipolar, or dysthmia). Furthermore, suicide rates within our nation continue to climb each year, and this is largely due to untreated or under-treated mental illness (CDC.Gov).

The treatment of mental health is very near and dear to me. Having struggled myself with anxiety and depression through my adolescence into my adult-life, as well as having multiple family members who have struggled, I find it so important to address in all aspects of my life (personally & professionally).

I chose to focus on nature as a healing modality for mental health, as I have seen how nature has impacted me and my own mental well-being. As, I mentioned above I struggled with depression, anxiety and suicidal ideation as a youth. The one thing that always gave me hope and clarity was the sun; in all my darkness the sun never failed me. To this day, I am obsessed with the sun and nature. I love being outside and instantly feel at peace when I am in nature.

To show how much I believe in the healing power of nature,
I always tell my clients in their intake session the following statement, “if you never come back to see me, at least get outside for 5-10 mintues a day (minimum), enjoy the sun and be present in nature”, as I know the power this has. Plus researched has repeatedly shown this (so it’s not just me making it up, ha!).

I have learned that nature is essential to our overall well-being. Since we evolved in nature, it is in our blood. Nature is truly vital for our survival. If we explore the data around a variety of physical and mental health issues, and explore how the world has become more urban, inodated with technology, etc, we can see correlation. The less time we have spent in nature, the more our overall wellness has been impacted. I have learned that my overall theory that nature is our best healer, really is true. From the research, my personal experiences, and through the work I have done with others who struggle with mental health, I can truly say this. Additionally, I have learned more ways we can become creative in incorporating green and blue spaces in our lives, even if we are living in urban areas.

Currently, within my practice I surround my personal space with plants, I bring the elements of nature indoors; I encourage my clients to do the same. I talk frequently with my clients about the need to get outdoors. I assign homework around being outdoors,

In the future, I would like to be able to offer my services outside, in nature—from nature walks/hikes, forest-bathing (shinrin-yoku), using horticultural practices—using plants as therapy, etc. I would like to explore additional course work and/or seminars that provide additional training around using nature in the healing process. I am also interested in taking courses in herbalism and horticulture, to further my understanding, so I can then apply these practices within sessions with my clients. Eventually I would like to become certified as a Horticultural Therapist. I would love to be an advocate for these types of therapies within mental health facitlities; especially long-term facilities. Additionally having green spaces (both inside and outside) within every school, group home setting and nursing home (including assisted living facilities).

The medicinal nature of nature has been shown since the beginning of time. Using nature for healing incorporates the mind, body, and spirit. Nature provides a way to heal holistically; it can be done through oneself or guidance from another. It can/does incorporate many of the modalities we have discussed in this course: Mindfulness, Meditation Exercise/Physical Activity, Nutrition/Diet, Connection, and Positive Psychology. I will demonstrate other ways this connection exists throughout this presentation.
