         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong><br>Suggested Format: 1-to-1</strong></div><div><strong>Instructional Focus:</strong> Citing Evidence, Making Inferences<br><strong>Standards: LAFS 6.RL.1.1</strong><br><strong>Reading: "The Ravine" from Collections; "Hawaii's Gifts" from Achieve3000<br>Speaking/Listening: <br>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;DAY 1: Teacher Direct Instruction - Before reading </strong>show the picture from "The Ravine" - Students will turn/talk about the questions in the picture. "What do you think is happening in the picture?" "Can you guess the location?" (3 minutes)<br><br><strong>Vocabulary: </strong>introduce using across disciplinary/key list words from "Hawaii's Gifts" in Achieve3000. Students choose two words that they really know and write the definition. Teacher will cover words students don't know. Students will start a working VIS chart.&nbsp; (7 minutes) <br><br><strong>Gradual Release:<br>I do/We do-</strong> teacher projects screen at an approaching lexile level, have a quick discussion of what they think the article will be about based on the picture, introduction, and quick background. Teacher will model reading, annotating and taking notes on the first couple lines. Then students will work on the last couple lines of the first paragraph in groups. <br><strong>&nbsp;You do/Independent 1, 2, 3 - </strong>students will log into their laptops and answer the before reading poll.
