This source tells me that Singapore before 1819 had political connections with the Portuguese.The Portuguese must have been interested in Singapore, due to Singapore's wealth and good trade. Singapore was in a strategic location, was an entrepot, the fall of Srivijaya had occurred and had the monsoon winds that brings traders and immigrants back and forth from their home country and Singapore. The monsoon blows southwest during December to March, for traders to travel down to Singapore. The monsoon winds blow northeast during June to September, for traders to return to their country.

The Orang Lauts gathered materials in the sea traded them for spare parts to built a boat for the people in Temasek, learning how to ride in a boat which is the first transportation known to be in Singapore before 1819.
