Based on the sources i have analysed,Singapore before 1819 was very weak so the got under the protection of the Majapahit Kingdom. Then they learned boating skills from the Orang lauts
and finally have a wealthy and a good trading area in Temasek. The island was known to be very weak in defence but good for trading areas for such products from other countries around the globe. The Orang Lauts gathered materials in the sea traded them for spare parts to built a boat for the people in Temasek, learning how to ride in a boat which is the first transportation known to be in Singapore before 1819. The Portuguese must have noticed about Temasek's wealth and its trading areas.
