Stage 1: Counselor builds trust by speaking truth with kindness. Students will be given multiple ways to contact the counselor, i.e. email, phone number, Google hangouts. Students' ideas for success will be validated. Successes will be rewarded with praise, and short-comings will have a plan of action before the end of group time. Students will commit to each other not to share with others outside of the group what is shared during group time. It may not seem important to the listener, but it is very important to the speaker.

Stage 2: Students will update their folder information about their progress to discuss their findings to the group. Students will share successful strategies with each other. Students will begin to aid each other during the week by checking in with each other.

Stage 3: When the group ends, students should have resources and new habits to be successful in their classwork. Also, students should have new friends who are also educated in successful techniques in order to support each other. Students will be encouraged to reach out to each other as well as the counselor should they find themselves not being successful in their coursework.

The counselor will begin as a resource for the students. She will provide a variety of suggestions that have been successful for other students. The counselor will shift from a presenter role to a facilitator of discussion. This style will lend itself to giving the student ownership over their choices. Also, the student will be educated in ways to be successful in academics.

Students who participate in Crowe's Owls will possibly experience Universality, Instillation of Hope, and Imitative Behavior. Students who have failed a course or more will lose faith in their abilities to be successful in school. Often, they feel overwhelmed and lose their sense of purpose. Failing classes and grade levels can cause students to feel like they are the only one who is such a failure. When they meet a group of students who are in the same academic boat, they can feel a sense of community. However, in this group, they will not continue to be unsuccessful in academics. They will have the supports and skills they will use to improve their academics. These actions will lead to a feeling of hope and realizing the possibility of graduating with their cohort. Students will share with each other their successful techniques and why it worked for them.

Texas counselors need to support at-risk students. Often, at-risk students are identified after a significant event has happened. The formation of Crowe's Owls is based on students who have failed one or more courses and are currently not successful in their current class. The counselor is challenging a targeted group of students who are experiencing chronic failure. The counselor cannot overlook this group as students who must experience the consequence of their decisions. The counselor should guide students to make better choices.
