Yellow Star provides a unique viewpoint of the Holocaust through a child's eyes. The novel provides a unique point of view through a young Jewish girl, Sylvia. Lodz Ghetto in Poland, the book follows Syvia's journey as she navigates the harsh realities of persecution, hunger, and loss while trying to maintain her sense of identity and hope. Through Syvia's perspective, readers witness the struggles and resilience of Jewish children during this tragic time, offering a compelling and deeply personal insight into the human cost of the Holocaust. Further, this unique perspective provides more connection amongst the students, as they are able to feel sympathy towards those who are in a similar age group.

The author uses the theme of death as a reminder of the horrors of the Holocaust and why what happened in World War II should not be forgotten.

Syvia’s earliest memories involve death. By the first winter in the ghetto, Hava’s brother dies and their families sit shiva for seven days. The families pay their respects for the dead as their religion dictates. They are confined to the ghetto because they are Jewish, but continue their traditions so that the traditions do not die.
