Eleanor and Park is a story told from the title characters' alternating points of view as they meet, and begin to fall in love. Eleanor, an overweight red head, is bullied and ridiculed at school, and goes home to an abusive stepfather and dysfunctional home. Park, whose father is a Vietnam veteran and mother is from Korea, struggles with his own identity and fitting in. Eleanor and Park bond over comics and music, and these motifs are repeated throughout the novel. The story’s lower reading level coupled with a higher level intended audience and relatable themes is a good fit for students who may be reluctant readers.
