Global Competence

Global competence refers to the acquisition of in-depth knowledge and understanding of international issues, an appreciation of and ability to learn and work with. people from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds, proficiency in a foreign language, and skills to function.

Through this project students will learn about how deforestation does not just exist in remote places of the world, nor does it only effect certain people and populations. Rather, students will learn the importance of everyone and everything living on the earth and how we'd all be affected by deforestation.

As part of this assignment, students will need to research their community as well as another community (of their choice) in a different part of the world so they can compare and contrast how important sustainable living is to us and our environment.

Students will come up with an action plan on how they are going to help combat deforestation and then share their project by posting their video on social media using the hashtag #wecansavetrees

The teacher will work with other grades, schools, communities, and schools in other countries to make these projects go viral. The whole idea is to spread sustainable development ideas and bring awareness to this topic with a focus on how we can help sustain our earth.

UN Goal 15 (Life on Land) =

The meaning of Goal 15 has a focus on deforestation and saving the forests. It aims to protect and restore sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, reserve degradation and combat desertification.

Indicator - The aspect that we are focused on is 15.1.1 Forest area as a proportion of total land area and 15.2.1 Progress towards sustainable forest management.

Teacher Resources - One resource regarding this goal is a link that gives an in depth explanation of the goal as well as Facts & Figures related to Deforestation and Degradation. http://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/biodiversity/

Another resource regarding this goal is a link to various lesson plans, activities as well as information to parents that align with the Common Core Standard and can be used throughout the unit as a guide.
https://educators.brainpop.com/bp-jr-topic/forests/

Relevance- Deforestation is something is very much an ongoing struggle in our world today. In fact, one and a half acres of forest is cut down every second. Around 18 million acres of forest are lost each year which is catastrophic. Not only are trees being taken away which affects our air that we breathe in but it's affecting our wildlife, homes are being taken away. It also effects the agriculture that we depend on for food.

Such factors of not keeping our planet clean and not recycling have an effect on the air we breath in. It's extremely important to take action on this goal of saving our forests. The number of acres that are lost are only going to keep growing and we'll be seeing less green and have more darkness.

There are 2 components to the Essential Question surrounding the learning objectives.
How would your personal life be impacted or changed as a result of deforestation and not protecting wildlife?
How would not keeping Earth clean, impact you and those around you?

This Essential Question provides students with a prompt to explore the many components of deforestation. Most importantly, how does it effect them personally. It gives them a sense of personal connection to the topic. Students will learn the lesson objectives of answering the essential question through activities and developing an action plan. Students will learn that trees provide crucial and important factors to Earth.

Without trees, humans would not be able to survive because the air wouldn’t be suitable for breathing. Trees are also a crucial part to the carbon cycle which helps carbon dioxide to circulate. They have a huge positive effect on the growth of humans.

This project will help student synthesize their own stance and find their own way to make an impact.

      Project Title
WE CAN SAVE TREES

This project will be a Social Studies project but could also integrate science. Students can utilize school library, access to the technology lab or computer carts for research. The project is aimed at Third Grade.

Students will begin by understanding Deforestation. Videos will assist in a better understanding. We recommend using a variety
of sources.
Here is one video example:

Students will research the affect and impact of deforestation. The student understanding can be assessed through a presentation, project or in written format.

Next students will research and determine ways that we can do to help. An important aspect of the project is to have student understanding we can all be part of changing or improving our Earth.

This will build on student prior knowledge of recycling to include additional ways our actions can impact our Earth.

Students will formulate a personal or group action plan that can be described within 30 seconds. Formulating a specific action will be a focus of the project. These action plans will be shared via the app Chatter Pix.

Student Example by Tristan Lehman
