He reshaped the government, and furthered education by implementing a library. He also taxed the church, an unpopular decision for some.</div>]]></description>

         <title>Emperor Yohannes IV and the war with Egypt</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Yohannes IV comes to power in 1871, furthering the goals of Tewodros. Egypt, controlled by the Ottoman Empire, and under supervision of Isma'il Pasha, goes to war with Ethiopia in an attempt to increase their size. Ethiopian soundly defeats them, both at the battle of Gundet in 1875, and the battle of Gura in 1876.</div>]]></description>

         <title>War with Sudan, the Mahdist war</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Muhammad Ahmad Bin Abd Allah led Sudan and overthrew the Egyptian government. They then went at Britain, who retreated into Ethiopia. They gained Ethiopian support in a political move to gain credence to their claims to Massawa(modern Eritrea). They failed, Italy beating them to it. Later in the war, the sub-governments of Gojjame and Shewa. They were silenced, but in the battle of Gallabat Yohannes would be killed by Sudan behind enemy lines. The Mahdists were later defeated by Britain though.</div>]]></description>

         <title>Emperor Menelik II, popular unifier </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Menelik II, who was in power from 1889-1913, formed Ethiopia into the government it has today. He also makes a permanent capitol of Addis Ababa. The changes he made helped make Ethiopia more internally peaceful. In 1889, he signed a treaty with Italy, giving them Eritrea in exchange for free passage for merchants. The Italians had a hidden clause though, that made Ethiopia pledge allegiance to Italy. Menelik II refused to sign the treaty, and Italy begins to invade.</div>]]></description>

Resulting from this was an Ethiopian victory, and clear recognition of Ethiopia's independence from Italy, France, and Britain.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Extremely popular and respected Haile Selassie abolished slavery and established advanced communication in Ethiopia, as well as its constitution during his reign in 1931. He gave a very popular speech to the League of Nations, and strengthened Ethiopia's foreign relations. There was even a Jamaican religion after him. He was deposed in 1974, and died in 1975.</div>]]></description>

Their military grew, and the Derg lost their hold on the country due to famine and drought. Many different liberation groups merged to take back their home. </div>]]></description>
