They failed, Italy beating them to it. Later in the war, the sub-governments of Gojjame and Shewa. They were silenced, but in the battle of Gallabat Yohannes would be killed by Sudan behind enemy lines. He also makes a permanent capitol of Addis Ababa. The changes he made helped make Ethiopia more internally peaceful. In 1889, he signed a treaty with Italy, giving them Eritrea in exchange for free passage for merchants. The Italians had a hidden clause though, that made Ethiopia pledge allegiance to Italy.
