Base color ash gray, brown to reddish brown; it has large light spots on its wings. It occurs in forests of all kinds, in gardens, city parks or cemeteries. They hunt for food - small mammals, birds and amphibians - at dusk and at night, either in slow flight over the ground or by attacking from an elevated position. It nests in cavities, in the attics of houses, or uses abandoned nests of predators. The female usually lays 3 to 4 eggs in late February, March or April; while she warms them, the male brings her food. Permanent, to a lesser extent flying species.

(by: Dominik F.)
Write name in:
Polish, Greek, French, Romanian:
In Czech: Sova:Puštík
In Polish : Płomykówka zwyczajna

The outer tail feathers are elongated, giving the distinctive deeply forked "swallow tail". There is a line of white spots across the outer end of the upper tail.[2] The female is similar in appearance to the male, but the tail streamers are shorter, the blue of the upperparts and breast band is less glossy, and the underparts paler. The juvenile is browner and has a paler rufous face and whiter underparts. It also lacks the long tail streamers of the adult.[3]
Although both sexes sing, female song was only recently described.[4] (See below for details about song.) Calls include witt or witt-witt and a loud splee-plink when excited (or trying to chase intruders away from the nest).[2] The alarm calls include a sharp siflitt for predators like cats and a flitt-flitt for birds of prey like the hobby.[5] This species is fairly quiet on the wintering grounds.[6]
The distinctive combination of a red face and blue breast band renders the adult barn swallow easy to distinguish from the African Hirundo species and from the welcome swallow (Hirundo neoxena) with which its range overlaps in Australasia.[3] In Africa the short tail streamers of the juvenile barn swallow invite confusion with juvenile red-chested swallow (Hirundo lucida), but the latter has a narrower breast band and more white in the tail.
Steigerwald Eva
Fifth Grade

The adult male has a red bill, large white crescent above the eye and reddish face and "whiskers". The male's breast is purple with two vertical white bars, and the flanks ruddy, and he has two orange "sails" at the back (large feathers that stick up like boat sails). The female is similar to the female wood duck, with a white eye-ring and stripe running back from the eye, but is paler below, has a small white flank stripe, and a pale tip to its bill. Both the males and females have crests, but the purple crest is more pronounced on the male.Like many other species of ducks, the male undergoes a moult after the mating season into eclipse plumage. When in eclipse plumage, the male looks similar to the female, but can be told apart by its bright yellow-orange or red beak, lack of any crest, and a less-pronounced eye-stripe.

Lupu Elena 5th class

Northern lawping is a migratory bird. Is is very small.
It is 28-33 cm(11-13 in) long bird with a 67-87 cm(26-34 in) wingspan and a body mass of 128-330g(4.5-11.6 oz). It has rounded wings and a crest. It has also the shortest-legged of the lawpings. It is mainly black and white, but the back is tinted green. The male has a long crest and a black crown, throat and breast contrasting with an otherwise white face. Females and young birds have shorter crests, and have less strongly marked heads, but plumages are otherwise quite similar.
This is a vocal bird in the breeding season, with constant calling as the crazed tumbling display flight is performed by the male. The typical contact call is a loud, shrill "pee-wit" from which they get their other name of peewit.Displaying males usually make a wheezy "pee-wit, wit wit, eeze wit" during their display flight; these birds also make squeaking or mewing sounds. It feeds primarily on insects and other small invertebrates. This species often feeds in mixed flocks with gloden plovers and black-headed gulls, the latter often robbing the two plovers, but providing a degree of protection against predators.

Like the golden plovers, this species prefers to feed at night when there is moonlight.
The Northern lawping- Romania, Neagu Rebeca- 5th class

The top of the body, wings, tail and rump are black, the throat and breast are white with a black stripe. The great spotted woodpecker can be distinguished from other woodpeckers by its bright red lower abdomen and undertail.

Woodpeckers are omnivorous birds. They feed mainly on insects, spiders and earthworms, as well as small fruits and nuts.

The easiest way to recognize woodpeckers is by the specific striking of the beak on the bark of the tree. These birds can strike up to 20 times in just 1 second!Woodpeckers' strikes on trees are not pointless. In this way, these birds drill small holes in the wood, thanks to which they can dig out larvae living in trees.

On the chin, the nightingale has a brown-gray strip of feathers, and sometimes dark spots or lines can be seen on its dark gray chest. This bird has relatively long wings, a dark brown beak and legs. The nightingale most often stays among wet forest stands and in river valleys and near lakes. Because the nest winds on the surface of the earth, the environment in which it lives must also abound in dense thickets. The nightingale's nest consists of decaying leaves, dry grasses and small twigs, and is lined with grass and roots.

The Common Blackbird.
The birds are the size of the well-known starling. The length of their body varies from 24 to 27 cm, and the wingspan is 34-4 cm. Males have black, glossy plumage with a distinct yellow beak (its tip turns black in autumn). Old males have an orange beak. The coloration of the male blackbird's beak is a trait used to attract a mate. Orange beaks tend to attract females more, indicating that the male has an easier time getting food. The coloration of the beak depends on the type and amount of carotenoids that the male receives from his food.
The common blackbird migrates to warmer Mediterranean regions in winter. Our forest blackbirds depart in October and November and return in March or April.
