What we can see in the differences between the leg pads is noticeable. First, while there is a pronounced curvature to the newer pads, this is solely based on a players preference which correlates to their playing style. The interesting difference is the strapping system seen in the older CCM pads. The plastic buckles with a nylon strap were introduced to drop weight from heavier leather pads. There were other advantages that the nylon straps and plastic buckles introduced, but due to the fact that they could easily break from being struck their use was limited. The number of straps used is significantly reduced in the newer pads. Pads are becoming more minimalistic to add performance. Also many newer pads are beginning to use a greater amount of elastic straps, which adds the benefit of stretching when needed, which the leather and nylon are not capable of.

The differences in gloves may seem to be visible on the outside, which some are, but most of the evolution in the catching gloves has been happening on the inside. On the outside we can see that more gloves today utilize a one piece cuff. On the older glove we can see a crease towards the wrist, while on the newer clove it is flush. Older gloves almost always featured a two piece cuff, they are still used today by some because they allow more flexibility when catching and stick handling. The newer cuff is more suited to the blocking play style that has been adapted. Its stiffness allows for a more reliable and consistent rebound. Most technology has focused on adapting removable palms inside the glove to fit each hand more comfortably. Also the use of advanced foams which are flexible and soft until impacted. These foams allow for maximum flexibility and movement until struck.

Blockers have probably seen the least amount of evolution and design advancement. In the older blocker the black binding that goes around he outside of the blocking surface has been removed. But this is also based on preference. While most stock models now do not have the binding it is still possible to have a blocker made with one. Most of the evolution is seen in the palm of the glove. Trying to use materials that are fast drying while also having properties that help with gripping and holding onto the stick. As with the catching glove, the newer blockers are starting to utilize advanced foams that can be twisted, pressed down, stretched but harden when impacted. This allows for needed mobility in the wrist and hand area while also providing needed protection.

Skates have evolved immensely throughout the years. In the pictures we can see the reduction in the cowling and the more aggressive angles and lines used in the design. In fact, some skates being made today do not offer cowlings. Instead the skate is made of composite material, lighter and stronger than kevlar in some cases. This allows for performance to increase because of the reduction in weight, and the enhanced attack angle the skate can reach without having the bulky cowling on the outside. The inner material used in skates also allows the skate to be "baked" to an individuals foot. This baking method allows the inside materials to soften and mold around the persons foot. After a certain amount of time the material inside cools and hardens making a unique fit for each foot. Similar to the process of heating a mouthguard.

Goalie sticks have evolved but not so much in design as in the material used. In the old TPS stick, it is made from layers of fiberglass with a foam core. Now the sticks being produced are made from composite. This composite is lighter and stronger, allowing for better performance and drastically less breaks. The TPS Rubber was unique, as its name points out there is rubber on the stick. The company placed a rubber covering around where the goalie holds the stick for two primary purposes. One being that it allowed for a more firm grip that would not slip. Two, it reduced vibration and shock that is created from harder shots. Now, most goalies use a type of sticky tape that performs this same function but is more easily replaceable when it wears down.
