Janet Liou-Mark, the former chair of my MAA section. She was phenomenal. She included everyone relevant in the decision-making process so everyone felt heard, and then she made good and useful decisions that were understood and accepted. She was supportive of us junior folks, and she was conscientious about developing a leadership pipeline within the section.

She also had a very warm leadership style that I'd never experienced before: none of us officers doubted that she cared about us on a personal level as well as a professional one. She got our best work out of us.

I am a wife, a mother, a sister, a mathematician, a first-generation college student from a terribly dysfunctional family background, a teacher, and now, the Director of Programs at the AMS. My journey to now doesn't start after grad school, it started long before that. I keep that in mind in everything I do- we all show up in every space we enter with a life story that is not just a math story.

My position entails managing a department that runs A LOT of programs at the AMS. Travel grant programs, outreach programs, research programs, etc. My goal with the project outlined in my proposal was to build connections with Minority Serving Institutions (HBCUs, HSIs, etc.) so that I can create a promotion and recruitment plan for these programs that results in broadened participation.

Hi! My name is Debbie Narang. I am an older, cisgender white woman with a doctoral degree in mathematics from the University of New Hampshire. I recognize my privilege in access to resources and opportunities and am striving not to make assumptions based upon my own experience. Although I grew up in the dominant groups of a very homogeneous region, going to graduate school, marrying a person of another race and culture, and adopting a child gave me a much greater appreciation for diversity. On-campus professional development and taking and facilitating the Inclusive STEM Teaching Project MOOC has helped me to realize how my positionality and that of my students can affect the classroom.

The local PI in our HHMI project is an effective leader. She has a clear vision to strengthen inclusion and belonging in new STEM students. She is open to new ideas and approaches. Rather than imposing her preferences or going for a majority vote, she seeks consensus before proceeding with a project. She works hard but is realistic with goal-setting. She listens and considers the team members’ strengths and interests in soliciting tasks. She also has a good sense of humor.
