This is a plan I had to have my broad daily goals added to a spreadsheet. I did not want to go too deep into my daily life, as that feels far too personal, but I tried to fill it in as well as possible. Really, I dont think it was that helpful, as it felt more like when I think of doing my nightly stuff I remembered I had to fill in the form rather than the other way around. In all, this is not my preferred way of working on habits and improving myself

Personality tests are supposed to be used to gather a basic understanding of a persons personality, and are sometimes used for career aptitude tests by employers. My results were for an INFT-P, or the mediator, with the myers-brigg's test. I talked with my mom, and she agreed that this was relatively accurate to who I am. I think that it accurately describes a lot of the feelings I have in my personality, but I also feel like the test does try to give broad ideas to try and make the person taking the test ascribe the ideas to themself personally. it also strikes me that every personality type is clearly written to be as positive and kind towards its potential user as possible, which feels wrong because some people just have the worst personality and should be judged for it by the site. I think the thing that makes me the most skeptical of the system is when people feel the need to self describe themselves as their letter sequence- the kind of people who would judge someone based off their test results make me think of it a lot as just astrology with some pseudo science to make it more palatable to those kinds of people.

The test works by having you answer various questions asking if you agree or disagree with various statements, and relates your personality based off 5 binary categories. I personally am a little bit skeptical of the true validity of these tests- in general, I get the feeling that these tests do a similar thing to what fortune tellers do, where they give vague generalizations of a person that the person themselves can attach to and say they agree, and by giving you one you can convince yourself it is accurate. However, I have done the test in the past and gotten the same result, so there is something to say about its reliability. In regards to the personality itself, I think that I attach value to a lot of the things it says- I find myself relatively empathetic, though I tend to find myself doubting that as it feels like an unempathetic, or at least narcissistic thing to believe about yourself. I suppose reading through the weaknesses, it does say that inft-p's are supposed to be self critical, which definitely confirms a lot of what I have already written here. in general, I think it is begrudgingly accurate, but I dont want to go to people and announce myself as an inft-p or whatever.

From the discussion chapter:

I believe Eeyore suffers from symptoms of Dependent Personality Disorder, as his actions show a lack of confidence in his own abilities and general sadness. Eeyore believes he has nothing to benefit the rest of the group with, and because of that believes he does not deserve to be with the group. he would be a part of the C cluster of disorders. I believe he has a comorbidity with depression as well, with the depression potentially caused by a lack of self value do to Dependent disorder.

I believe The Grinch suffered from Antisocial tendencies, as he acts in ways that hurt others to reach toward his goal of destroying christmas. His willingness to lie to Cindy Lou shows a willingness to hurt others and to lie to them. However, the assessment does fail to mention that the Grinch does go out of his way to save Cindy Lou from dangers, and he does return the present's he stole after realizing they were not the true value of christmas- I would argue that the grinch simply needed to find a better relationship with the Whovians , which was not overly praising or over sensitized, but simply to meet with them on his terms. he would fall into personality cluster B, and shows avoidant personality disorder as well in his hermetic lifestyle and avoidance of people.

Piglet shows symptoms of Generalized Anxiety Disorder, with consistent excessive anxiety over daily activities. With a consistent amount of anxiety, Piglet shows recurring anxiety over time.

(I added this as a comment later)

I may have gotten the comorbidities mixed up, as Eeyore shows more signs of depression than Dependant Personality disorder. I mostly noticed from the reading of the article the lack of self esteem and the lack of self valuation with regards to his own role in the group. Eeyore in general has many depression symptoms, the main thing tripping me up is how involved in the group he consistently is, but with low energy and a lack of motivation, Eeyore shows more signs of depression than not. I feel like there could be some smaller symptoms of Dependant personality disorder, but probably not enough to be an official diagnosis.

From the journal entry:

I have never watched Fly Away, but I believe Mandy shows signs of being on the autism spectrum- echolalia, or repeating what others say, is a common symptom of autism, as is a need for a strict and consistent routine, and frustration when unable to follow the routine. I believe, speaking partially from experience, Mandy is violent when she feels frustrated, as a way of lashing out at not being able to be understood or not receiving what she needs, and not as a part of antisocial nature. I also believe she may have a comorbidity with Bipolar Disorder, as she has dramatic mood swings at random.

I know much more about Bart Simpson. Depending on the episode, Bart can have symptoms of ADHD or a bit of anti-social personality disorder. The article also notes that it doesn't know how the intelligence is affected by genetics, but the episode Lisa the Simpson the Simpsons gene, a genetic formation passed down by Simpsons that can make someone start as smart as a monkey, but end up dumb as a chimp, and vice versa somehow. One episode reveals that Bart actually takes Ritalin to deal with symptoms of ADHD as well- not my favorite episode but still. Bart mostly has trouble focusing on subjects which he has no interest in- if he is interested in a subject, he can reach levels of savant in it, whether it be drumming, military training, or being a cop. Bart also suffers very much from being the oldest sibling, and a lot of his acting out can be in the goal of receiving attention from parents and others who find themselves more interested in his brilliant sister Lisa.

The first resource I would like to critique is The Trevor Project, a crisis hotline intended to help young Queer individuals get help when they are in a suicidal mindset. They offer this through text phone or web services to work with councilors for advice or just someone to talk with, and provide these services for free. They work through donations, and are a major charity supported by many groups I have seen. The crisis line has a strong focus on deescalation, to help those who are in dangerous situations remove themselves from it. They also help with advice for coming out to family members or other important situations. This is an extraordinarily noble goal, and from all I have seen, a very successful one, and I applaud them for the work they perform for a community in need. another extremely good feature they have is the ability to press escape three times on their website to hide the window instantly- for people in situations where being on their website could be dangerous, this can be an extremely effective safety net for them.

Up next is iprevail, a service which I have never heard of until finding it in this list. They appear to be a service which provides live counseling for those struggling with anxiety or other mental health issues, and also resources for better understanding mental health issues and techniques to help with it. They provide their services for free, at least for residents of LA County, and seems rather helpful. I dont really know about the ability of their counselors but I think its worth using if you need it.

The last service I will talk about is the LBCC student health services, which are provided to all students at long beach city college. They are willing to give immunizations and various tests for a lower price than the average doctor, but will also provide mental health resources like therapists and advisors. They primarily focus on helping with academic situations, and while they wont do long term therapy, they can provide referrals to other groups that could be of help when needed. closely related to them as well are the disabled students programs and services, which help those with disabilities receive reasonable accommodations for their needs. I personally use their services, and one of the best functions they have is the testing center, which allows you to takes tests in a low distraction environment, and sometimes with time and a half. If you have documentation of disability, even if you havent used it before, you should work with them and see how they can help!

Final (Rise and fall of the Asylum)

In the documentary series “Mysteries of Mental Illness,” and the episode “The Rise and Fall of the Asylum, we are given a brief history of asylums from their genesis in the 1800’s, to the decline and shutdown in the 1970’s, after Reagan released the Lanterman-Petris-Short Act, which ended the process of forced institutionalization, followed by the cutting of funding to asylums. Almost every act involving asylums, from the creation to the usage to the ending of them, is a mixed bag of good intentions and negative outcomes, and can show the direct correlation of how mental health was viewed over time. It shows primarily the use of the asylum as a way to get rid of “undesirables” at its worst, whether that be the actually mentally ill or sometimes family members people (mostly husbands) wanted out of their lives. The asylum was initially created as a place for its patients to be away from the stresses and stimulation of the modern world, but over time became a place for society to not have to think about the less fortunate amongst them.

The part of the video that most intrigued me, and says the most about the history of asylums, is where it talked about when overpopulation of asylums lead to more and more deaths, and for the asylums to explain their failings to help their patients by saying that the people themselves were to fault for their inability to recover, claiming that the people were “biologically defective,” and used language of the eugenics movement to try to find a way to keep their jobs and attempt to lower the amount of patients by Involuntarily sterilizing patients. I think this moment is one of, if not the darkest parts of the history of psychology, brought to reality not entirely through malice, but desperation. With the connection to the eugenics movement, it also brought in race as well as mental health, and marginalized populations were more likely to be institutionalized than white people. Although I am certain that it is more complicated than shown in the documentary, the development of Psychiatric medicine helped to calm this period of desperation and horror by offering a way to help more people more effectively, and potentially allow them life out of asylum via the use of antipsychotics.

In today's society, I believe that the use of the asylum is not truly an answer to help the mentally ill. Even if they were to work fully functionally and assist people within the asylum, they would be unable to help people when they left the state of safety they had within the asylum. I believe that something like the California Housing and Disability Advocacy Program, expanded upon, would be the most effective tool for getting people to live their lives as normally as possible. The CHDA, as it is now, is a tool for chronically homeless people to receive government owned housing and support within it. I believe that with more access to this program to more people with mental illnesses and other problems that make it hard to live within the system as a neurotypical person would, Disabled people would have significantly less stress in their lives with regards to affording housing, and would make providing services directly to those living within government much easier, as it would allow better resources to help with medical compliance and support with keeping medicinally supported- I personally suffer from some mental illnesses, and I know one of the things that stresses me out at times is the idea of having to deal with obtaining more medication when I am out of medicine and not able to function at my full mental capacity, and having to deal with the bureaucracy, finding a psychologist, dealing with insurance, and everything else necessary to receive the medicine I need to be able to do those things in the first place. I think with government housing, the ability to receive check-ins with social workers in order to ensure people can receive the support they need to live their lives safely and healthily. In total, the expansion of housing programs and reduction of requirements to receive it would very effectively help those with disabilities stay safe and healthy, and the addition of resources to help with medication and access to needs, would be of significant help to those using it.

Citations

Brucker, Debra & Scally, Corianne.
