Stick Note #1: Predicting and Clarifying

I am wondering if this book is going to be about Jonas going off to college or about his journey through high school. Jonas is faced with a lot of challenges in his home environment. However, colleges are interested in recruiting him. So will this book be about how he gets into college despite his struggles, or will it go into more detail about the struggles he faces during his years in high school?
25% of the way through the book is when I was able to predict this.

Sticky Note #2: Connecting

Text to Text: This reminds me of another book I've read, The Crossover, because both of the main characters must overcome difficulties within their home life, and college may or may not be options for them despite the recruitment efforts.

Text to Self: I can relate to some of the challenges Jonas faces at school. Sometimes I get easily distracted, and then get in trouble which makes me upset with myself because I want to do a good job and succeed. I want to go to college someday too.

Text to World: The struggles he faces in high school will still carry over to his college years. So Jonas is going to need to learn how to either accept or overcome these struggles. Working through challenges and faces fears is something that many of us all face and need to work on.
50 % through the book is when I made these connections.

While going through high school Jonas worked hard on himself to overcome the struggles he was facing. His ultimate goal was to get a scholarship to go to college, since his family was too poor to send him on their own. The reader was able to gain confidence in the fact that Jonas was going to get that scholarship and accomplish his goals because he continued to overcome the challenges in his life and was determined not to fail. So, before the book ended I was confident he would succeed no matter what he set out for himself.
75% of the way through the book is when I was able to infer this.

I vividly remember picturing when he first met Levi at a basketball court. Levi was Jonas's new neighbor. Levi was over 6' foot tall, and the book was very descriptive about the details of the game they played that day. It ended up being a close game and Levi won the game that day.
Page 48

The main events in the story include Jonas moving, meeting Levi, and playing with his team.
When he first moved to Seattle he was getting to know the neighborhood. He found the basketball court and practiced every day. That's when he met Levi. They talked and got to know each other. They figured out they were on the same basketball team. They played a 1 on 1 and talked about the team. Once he got to meet his team and play basketball with them that's when the real story started. Meeting Levi was a good distraction for Jonas because he had a challenging home life and was struggling with a lot of things going on. Levi was a positive distraction.
100% completed with book
