Drug addiction is very hard to get through even on your own. Although it is treatable. Dr. Alan I. Leshner is the director of the NIDA and claims that brain of a severe drug addict is chemically different from a non-addict and should be treated very accordingly. After a long period of time, of drug usage there is a change in the brain chemically and the user is no longer voluntary. Medication for drug abuse should be given along with therapy and support from family.

Even though there is no miraculous way to be able to treat addiction, it can it can possibly slow the process down. However drugs such as heroin and cocaine can be treated medically but with them come drawbacks that can be difficult to go through.

Many professionals such as DR. Gene M. Heyman who is a research psychologist personally believe that even though abuse of drugs can induce impulsive behavior, drug addicts have an ability to retain and have control of there behavior. There are programs that embrace the idea that addiction is a behavioral aspect that can be defeated by the ability of choice. One good example is the Rational Recovery program and the believe that self-empowerment through abstinence is the crucial piece of starting and finishing recovery especially with 12 step groups. They encourage people that struggle with addiction to try and recover with "addictive voice recognition training. Another program that helps with recovery is the Self management and recovery training and this primarily focuses on enhancing individual motivation and tries to help addicts practice new behaviors and does not invoke 12 step programs.

A big amount of experts are beginning to view drug addiction as a big phenomenon as it can lead to social dysfunction. This causes thought that in order to treat addiction, one must address and confront the reasons behind it. These experts also believe that drug abuse can't be handled without addressing social and economic qualities. Experts of this belief think that many severe addicts come from low-income backgrounds. Those who emphasize the so called "root causes", approach for a decent percentage of drug funding to be spent on education and especially employment in the not so good areas. Elliot Currie a criminologist believe that treatment must be linked to the addicts broader lifestyle improvement.

Addiction is a disease and can be hard to go alone. Drug users were stigmatized -- addiction was and still is seen as a weakness and drug addicts were believed to be self-centered hedonistic. This thought started to change drastically through the 70's and 80's. Sadly veterans returned home to become severe drug addicts addicted to some of the deadliest drugs such as heroin and marijuana. There have been different models of research programs and many doctors have embraced the "disease model" and many experts now support as a investment in public funds. Studies have found that treatment is not only rehabilitative but is also a way to fight drug abuse. However there are treatment gaps. The office of national drug control policy about half of 3.6 million people who badly needed treatment could not afford it or in fact find it.
