This Sea let people travel easily and see enemies coming from a distance because of the Sea. You could also use it as a great source of food getting a lot of fish. Common fish in Rome are Grouper (one of the best fish), Tuna and shrimp a shell fish. These all have great sources of meat that probably served Rome well.
