'Purpose'

I agree with you Noreen - identification or crystallisation of core purpose is very difficult for me too! In your talk, community and family definitely shine through as key motivators for your leadership point of view and your 'why'.

Kat – your points on authenticity resonate with me, and I am very interested in your reflection of the pitfalls of democratic leadership in emergency situations, but also stiff hierarchical leadership also being an inherent risk at times and importance of being flexible. Your discussion on psychological safety links in very nicely with the challenging conversations module by Emma.

-Sam (I hope I am using this padlet correctly?)

found this yesterday on the free mindfulness part of growthpod. Very good summary of psychological safety which i think has come up in a few peoples reflections. definitely something that i think is key in leadership.

Ben

Noreen, I really though your statement about life purpose so powerful. It is one thing that I though about myself one year ago. My life purpose when I was 25 not reflect who I am 10 years later.

Hannah, I understand your feeling about your history teacher. Sometimes, when we change the perspective, our thoughts change too. I think it is exactly what we are talking about this morning... our self evaluation changed during this short time.

Yara

Vish's comment on the necessity to have a responsibility and duty of care for our colleagues/followers. If we can consider these when caring for patients, we must consider them for our colleagues.

I think it links to Hannah's mentioning of the operating theatre leaders absenteeism, they are displaying a lack of responibility to their staff by not being present, or engaging/involving them in decison making. Even for beneficial decisions/changes, there is no trust or buy-in.

With staff not feeling heard, their fulfillment and job satisfaction may in turn be negatively affected. Will mentioned fulfillment as a core value, and I think its critical for ones own self to feel fulfilled, but there is also a great importance as a leader to endeavour to help staff feel fulfilled.

Interesting that both Sam and Beth commented on the importance of health equity and how this drives them. Agree fully that it is hard to lead a team you don't know. The work we have done on the course around finding what motivates people has been an eye opener for me and something I have taken back to the workplace which I hope will help moving forward.
Sam - I'd be interested to hear more about how an individual changed their leadership style during covid with good results, do you think they will resort to their previous style once out of 'crisis' management?
Will - wow, impressive video and very watchable. The word accessibility struck me, its vital for teams to find their leaders accessible and something I have found much easier with leaders in healthcare that retain even a small clinical role and are seen on the shop floor. Those leaders that leave and sit behind in an office all day can quickly loose that feeling of accessibility and have to work hard to be visible and accessible for staff.
QC

Really great vidoes all.
Too many thoughts to put coherantly on here.
Its fascinating how varied in background, purpose and motivators we all are, but all end up with similar thoughts. Do you think that this is the product of the course and community we have developed this year, or that we self selected to come on this course?
Sam - I really enjoyed your obersevations on how leadership styles changes in covid, how autocratic management was welcomes and effective, when in other scenarios would have just been a disaster. I wonder how intentional this was by our leaders, or was it their leadership safe-space in a time of stress?
