Revenge of the geeks

Although people in high school would consider the smart people as geeks or nerds or assume that they were embarrassing.. They had no idea that their future was most likely brighter than the more popular individuals. The popular were busy maintaining their spotlight instead of focusing on their schoolwork or future. Their high school spotlight would not help them survive adulthood, because while they were busy being popular, the "geeks" took advantages of their differences and learned valuable life skills to endure them in their adulthood. "So what happens to high school's popular students? Research shows that they are more likely than outsiders to conform, which can also mean they're less likely to innovate. They are more likely to be both targets and instigators of aggression — whether physical or relational, which includes rumors, gossip and backstabbing."(
226)

In Paragraph 10 it states, ''People thus had three choices when they encountered the Other: They could choose war, they could build a wall around themselves, or they could enter into dialogue.''

The Dolls House represents the strength that comes from being an outsider and that being different can be positive. The Kelvey girls are shunned, mocked, and rejected in the story by both their peers and adults. However, they do not allow this to affect them and they don't change to fit in with the crowd. "Is it true you're going to be a servant when you grow up, Lil Kelvey?" shrilled Lena. There was only dead silence as a response. Instead of answering, Lil only gave a silly, shamefaced smile. She didn't seem to mind the question at all. (paragraph 38-39 page 205). They were also unlike their classmates because they aren't lazy and know how to work for what they want. "They were the daughters of a spry, hard-working little washwomen who went about from house to house everyday." paragraph 5-6 page 203.

Ultimately, being cast as an outsider does not have to pose a threat. A difference can be positive, such as the "geeks" in high school. Most of these geeks took these differences and turned them into advantages in their adulthood. The Kelvey's differences made them strong and mature, they didn't feel the need to participate and feed the bullies. In Encountering the Others, people had lived for so long without realizing there were people different from them. When all the different people finally united, they all realized that working together was the best way to work. There were different skills another culture could have to teach or different ways of living that can open our way of thinking. As has been noted, a difference is not a weakness, everyone is different in their own way, take those differences and make them advantages.

A difference is not a weakness, it's just a part of life. Everyone is unique in their own way, they aren't negative characteristics unless you make them negative. Although many people may argue that being different can ruin people because they feel lonely as an outcast, but we argue that people actually don't need to belong.
