Role 1. Reproduce Mysterious Atmosphere in Medieval Times

With one of the key elements being to reproduce a mysterious atmosphere suggested by medieval times, there are scenes in the story that prove it to be apparent. For instance, towards the end of the story, the narrator is reading a book to Mr. Usher and “as if a shield of brass had indeed, at the moment. Fallen heavily upon a floor of silver- I became aware of a distinct, hollow, metallic, and dangerous… His eyes were bent fixedly before him, and throughout his whole countenance there reigned a stony rigidity,”(333). In the scene, the use of the words “silver, brass and metallic”, indicate a relation to medieval times and castles since at the time, those things were utilized greatly. In accordance to the atmosphere of the castles as lonely to the point of eeriness, and when he had used the descriptions of hollow and dangerous, it gave off the same feeling. The fact that Mr. Usher was completely still and still focused into a stare, added to the mood as suspense.

Role 1. Bizarre and Macabre

In addition, within the story, there were many instances of bizarre and macabre events. Towards the ending, where Lady Usher comes back from her tomb, “there was blood upon her white robes and the evidence of some bitter struggle upon every portion of her emaciated frame… the, with a moaning cry, fell heavily inward upon the person of her brother, and in her violent and now final agonies, bore him into the floor a corpse, and a victim to the terrors he had anticipated”(333). When identifying the aspect of gore, her body and clothing were so bloodied and ruined because of the live burial. She also fell upon Mr. Usher, killing him on the impact, having them both die into the ground of the house. The event is also pretty bizarre in addition to gorey because she had come back from the grave, which typically does not happen in real life.

The section continues with the narrator reading Mr. Usher the tale of Sir Lancelot. In the story, Ethelred slays the dragon and the sound that came from the dragon was described to be ever so retched, a sound in which they heard from under the house also. From there, he paused the story to check on Mr. Usher, who was staring blankly and was not responding to him, as if he couldn't even hear him. Suddenly, the entire house began to rock back and forth and as he rushed to Usher to check on him, he was mumbling disturbingly. He then breaks into a sort of hysteria, going on and on about the sounds of the story, being real life and Madeline breaking out of her tomb. Though it sounded fiction, when they turned to the door, she was right there looking like the dead and jumped onto Mr. Usher, both falling into the house, to their deaths. Scarred from the event, the narrator rushes out of the house as it is collapsing and rode far enough into the darkness to witness, "The Fall of the House of Usher".

I did actually hear a low and apparently distant but harsh protracted and most unusual screaming or gating sound.
