In addition to how the English felt about Natives, they also had their own unique religious beliefs. The English were Protestants or "Puritans" who were Christian, yet separate from the Catholic church. In upper Guinea, African societies used the Mediterranean to trade ivory, gold, and slaves for finished goods. Ghana had one of the largest empires of the time and developed a trade center called Timbuktu. Southern Africans lived in villages and had little contact with Europeans. Southern Africans traded, made their own good, fished, raised livestock, and were strong in producing crops.  Some interior Africans were nomadic. Divided work by genders.
