The story starts with Alex and his family on vacation in California, but Alex is then called saying that there has been a murder of a female actress and that he needs to go help with the investigation. So Alex  goes to the crime seen scene where a actress had been shot in her limo along with the driver. Emails were sent from the killer to the police department that were sent by Mary Smith. After Alex's vacation he is sent back to California to continue to work on the Mary Smith case. There had been even more killing by the same person, and they were all famous actresses or female movie producers with families and kids. But wile investigating these murders he notices that after the killer shoots the victim she cuts up the face very sloppily. Alex comes to the theory that the killer  is losing control of herself. After her last kill they had a lead on a blue chevy driving away from the crime scene. And a woman who matched up Mary Wagner, lives near the spot where the emails were last sent. So when Alex interviews her, he discovers that she suffers from some sort of psychological disorder that either led or caused her to kill her three children 20 years ago and has then. tried to live on by pretending they are still alive. But after she was brought into custody they found out she wasnt responsible for the Mary Smith Murders. The got a lead on a guy named Michael Bell and he used Mary Wagner to throw off the cops. When Alex finds him at his house Michael is shot by Alex. Sometimes the conflicts were between Alex and his family because Alex is never around for his kids.
