Nina Simone was born on February 21, 1933, in North Carolina. Although she was a famous singer before the Civil Rights Movement, she incorporated the message of the movement into her songs during the time. She was moved by the events that she witnessed and let her music reflect this. One particular song, ''Mississippi Goddam'' was written in 1964 after a church bombing in the state that killed activists.

This song is popular today, but few people know its association with the Civil Rights Movement. Originally written in the 1920s by Harry Dixon Loes, ''This Little Light of Mine'' was used by both leaders and participants in the 1960s. Although Dixon was a white male from the north (in other words, had very little personal experience with the injustice African-Americans faced) this song became linked with the Civil Rights Movement because it sounds like a slave spiritual. Some lyrics and phrasing of the song were adapted to fit the narrative of the Civil Rights Movement by Zilphia Horton.
