Non-Judgement

As a future helping professional the main value I would like to embody is non judgement. I think this quote demonstrates my worldview quiet well. There are very few scenarios I've been presented with where I truly believed I would have done differently from the person who experienced it if I had the same life experiences as them. Morality is still important to me but not as much so as the physical reality of people's situations. I am in no position to judge a starving person for stealing when the only thing preventing me from doing the same is circumstance.

The pursuit of knowledge

I think its important to be informed on a wide array of perspectives and life experiences, whether you work in human services or not. I don't really read much but when I do I like to read about the lived experiences of others, which is why I've attached a photo of the books I've read this year. I think its important to understand the perspectives, worldviews and life experiences of the people around you in your community. A lack of understanding of these factors further contributes to the marginilization of oppressed groups and encourages social division. It is my personal belief that it is not the job of individual communities to clear up misconceptions about their culture, but rather the responsibility of the individual to combat ignorance through the pursuit of knowledge.

Equity is one of the values I associate with most. I think everyone deserves to have the same opportunities even if they had different starting points. This is the quintessential image that comes to mind when equity is mentioned. It is my belief that as a human service professional a commitment to creating equity is crucial in upholding best practice. The historical and social contexts of so many issues are overlooked in the creation of programs and policies which creates further alienation from the groups they seek to help. I hope to not only maintain but develop this value in my professional practice. I chose this image because I felt that it clearly defines equity and what separates it from equality.

I chose this image because I believe it exemplifies the value of community to me. It was taken during a Friendsgiving with my family of choice. Pictured is the aftermath of my friend's first hand turkey. We came together this year as a group of queer Arabs and each taught each other how to make a dish from our respective homelands. The opportunity to come together and express gratitude for each others company meant more to me than I can express with words. In my professional career I hope to facilitate environments for the populations I work with where they are able to feel the same.

This is one of the only physical photos I have of my grandmother. It was taken during her pilgrimage to mecca. Although we were not the same religion the spiritual guidance she gave me always seemed to help. It was never forcred on me or brought up to diminish my beliefs. This photo brings me pride in my islamic heritage because despite being from a more traditional generation my grandmother truly did embody the islamic value of non-judgment. I am proud to be descended from a woman who held beliefs so strong she was willing to walk to through the desert for them, without thinking less of me for disagreeing.

I think confidentiality is important not only in professional practice but in personal interactions with others. People have the right to keep secrets and the write to exercise discretion in who they tell. Going against confidentiality shows an inherent lack of respect for a person's right to tell their own story. When someone discloses something to you it is done with the trust that your perception of them will not change. I think this photo exemplifies how much of an honour it truly is to be trusted to hear someone's story. I chose this quote because I feel that it expresses this viewpoint perfectly.

Social justice goes hand and hand with the value of equity. I think this photo exemplifies not only the drive for social change but the willingness to stand up for it. I believe that true allyship means declaring solidarity for a group and standing up for their best interest even when it could be met with vitriol. If you're not willing to stand by your values I don't believe that they're truly that valuable to you.

Everyone is human, everyone makes mistakes, including social workers. The way we move forward from these mistakes defines us far more than our shortcomings do. The first step in rectifying a problem we have created is acknowledging the role we played in creating it. Accountability also means anticipating potential sources of human error, especially when it pertains to the obligations you hold to others. I think this quote is pertinent because it mentions that we must remain accountable for mistakes that happened as a result of inaction, not just our actions. I think this concept is important in both personal and professional relationships and is the cornerstone of trust and integrity.

One of the most important things you can do for yourselves and others is conduct yourself in a way that is authentic to who you are. If you allow yourself to be swayed by external judgements of your values you run the risk of living out of alignment with them. I chose this photo of myself because I feel most authentic when I am with my loved ones. The photo in question was taken at a metric concert and despite being made fun of by my friends for listening to "old people music" we all had a great night. I got made fun of the whole time, but never let up on speaking my truth (I love metric). Although this is a more lighthearted example of living in my truth I do believe that I carry this with me in all aspects of my personal life and hope to bring it into my practice with me.

I think balance is important in all aspects of life, especially when it comes to career. I thought this image demonstrated how delicate true balance is and how it must be intentionally maintained. In my professional career it will become a pillar of self-care and ultimately help prevent me from burning out. I have the tendency to be a workaholic so balance is a value I would really like to incorporate more into my day to day life.

I value growth not only for myself but others. I think everyone has the capacity to grow and that capacity is explored in a healthy community. I hope that my personal growth will inspire professional growth and vice versa; I also hope to inspire growth in my clients. Although I understand that will not be possible to do with everyone, I hope to provide a positive experience for the majority of clients placed in my care. I chose this photo to demonstrate growth because I truly do believe so much of it is based in taking the resources you have in your environment and doing the most you can with them.

I believe everyone deserves to experience peace and that most people's behaviour is motivated by the pursuit of it. In my personal life I know a lot of the difficult decisions I've made have been with the intention of creating or maintaining my peace. In my professional practice I would like to ensure that no matter what I do I'm able to provide clients with a little bit more peace of mind than they came to me with. I chose this image because it's where I go when I need to clear my head. I almost always leave here with a sense of clarity that I would like to provide for others.
