Reflect on Blow’s argument (see link to article) by drawing on course material. How is this case of police brutality and others like it, related to the larger issue of mass incarceration?

Mass incarceration is the reason why America has a hold on the people of color. It is the new way of telling us that the Jim Crow Law can still exist within our racist society. Blows argument states that these shootings happen because America accepts it and it is true. I agree to what he said because if America was against racism, we would not have so many people of color in prison nor would we have our black brothers and sisters six feet underground for being in their grandmothers backyard. An act as being in your own home is not safe for a person of color. America is turning into a place that adores genocide and this is not what our country was built upon. On a larger scale, America still has the lives of people of color in prisons who still have a chance of being saved. As our world becomes to accept inclusion, we hope that we can find safety for all people, even people of color.

Prompt: One year ago, the police murdered Stephon Clark. You may remember this or perhaps this news has blurred into all of the other numerous examples of police violence against people of color. Charles Blow, columnist for the New York Times, argues that: “These shootings keep happening because, on some level, America finds them acceptable, finds them unfortunate but unavoidable.”

Then, identify one concrete solution to any aspect of mass incarceration. Find a specific solution that intrigues you (you may find inspiration in the Vogue, Black Youth Project, or ACLU links below but you're not limited to these).

To end mass incarceration, we have to think about who we are punishing and what we are punishing them for. Communication is key. We must try to communicate with our authorities to see why we are being arrested and know what to do when we are being put in a situation where we may be detained. People say that it is easier to kill them with kindness. The same situation applies when dealing with cops. Keeping the answers short and following the law by not attacking them can easily be a way we end mass incarceration and make the process easier to being released.

"Incarceration is dramatically skewed by race. More than 60 percent of those in prison in America are people of color." Page 56 of When We Fight We Win.

As one can see by statistics, people of color are the ones who are mostly in jail. What bothers me is that these people in jail do not even make up half of Americas population. How is it that a whole race can be incarcerated for wrong-doings and everybody outside stay quiet about these arrests?

Bail is one of the reasons why mass incarceration exists. People are not able to make bail while making minimum wage or even more. Bail is typically set at $5,000, a number that most people cannot afford to pay or will probably ever see in their entire lives. We need to change how bail is set. Bail is set for people who have a lot of money. Typically in the society we live in, those people who have money are white people who can easily make bail. People of color cannot make bail since they cannot afford it. This causes our society to be free built on wealth. This means that poor people get to sit in jail while rich people get to walk free until proven guilty.

He was a person of color but most of all he was a human. He was in his grandmothers backyard using his phone when he was murdered. Due to the prison industrial complex, the police did have a mic on them but was muted after he was killed.
