As people discovered better ways to produce steel it became easier to create rails for trains. When more and more cities became connected by rails different areas began to specialized in the products they produced, because it was easier to trade goods. The creation of the railroad also brought about the invention of standard time. Each town used to have their own local time, but when trains became popular a standard time was needed to make train schedules work.

During the industrial revolution our country shifted from an agricultural society to an industrial society. People moved into cities to work in the factories, and cities grew. The U.S. started to produce more factory goods, and the economy was focused more on industry. The majority of the population moved from being farmers to laborers working in the factories. With the industrial revolution came the spirit of invention, and people invented lots of things to help improve life.

George Pullman was an inventor who invented the sleeper car. When Pullman traveled on trains he noticed how they weren't very comfortable. The cars were dirty and uncomfortable which made traveling unpleasant. The sleeper cars Pullman invented were luxurious and made traveling by train much more enjoyable. To help produce his cars Pullman created a town named Pullman Illinois near a the factory where his cars were made. The facilities were nice, but the rent was high and when Pullman had to cut wages the rent stayed high. In 1894 the workers went on strike and troops had to be sent in to deal with the protesters.

William McKinley ran for president during the election of 1896, and he was the gold bug candidate. During his campaign McKinley would give his speeches from his front porch in Canton Ohio, unlike his competitor William Jennings Bryan who traveled to 27 different states to speak during his campaign. McKinley was the republican, and was looking out more for the big industries, rather than the common people like farmers and laborers. McKinley won the election and the gold standard was used, rather than the bi-metal standard.

A robber baron was a wealthy industrialist, but who also didn't contribute in a positive way to society. They would find ways to ruin competing businesses, so they would have a monopoly and not deal with competition. Robber barons would also deplete natural resources, and weren't concerned about the environment. They would force their factory workers work in terrible conditions, only caring about making a profit, not about the happiness of the workers

I connect to the past because of the creation of standardized time. Standardized time was created during the industrial revolution to help with train schedules. Standardized time was needed because before it existed every town had their own local time. This made it difficult to understand train schedules, because if schedules used local time a train could leave one station at 3:30, travel for an hour, and arrive at another station at 3:40.

Burning Rivers

The most interesting thing I learned was that during the industrial revolution there were many cases of rivers catching on fire. Oil companies would use natural oil to make kerosene, and a byproduct of this process was gasoline. Since this was before automobiles there was no need for gasoline, and because there were no environmental protection laws many factories would just dump the gasoline into rivers. The gasoline would float on top of the river, and it would ignite, setting the river on fire.
