Lithuanians have always felt proud of our giant woods that cover one third of the country's total area. Even the green color in our flag repressents the greatness and beauty of the forests. Unfortunately, when asked what is serious environmental issue in our country nowadays, a common Lithuanian would say – deforestation. Since Lithuanians have a strong boundary with nature, seeing empty fields, holes in the landscape, cut down trees in their beloved walking areas raised a concern and various moral worries to inhabitants.

In 20 years (from 2001 til 2020) Lithuania lost 349kha of tree cover, equivalent to a 15% decrease in tree cover. The actual scale of deforestation is about 2.5 times higher than the sustainable use of forests. As you can see in the picture, from 2013 the amounts of usage of forest became dangerously high all around the country.

There are many places in this wood where human activity is restricted as the territories are tried to be preserved. However, in last years loggers received permission to cut the forest, and such decision angered as well as surprised the people. Now the wood is still constantly being destroyed and cut. People cannot pick mushrooms and berries there anymore, it is no longer appropriate for animals to live and plants to grow. It is estimated that 300 pairs of birds could lose their home if 1 ha of forests are cut down.

Also, environmentalists state that forest has magical power to change climate conditions. It is able to stop strong winds and even save buildings. Deforestation is the reason why there is an increase of squalls in Lithuania.

However, word "duty" does not imply here that politics follow deontological ethical theory. In my opinion, none of ethical theories can be used to describe such actions, because I believe they are not reasonable enough and unethical. Since none ethical theory is suitable to describe the politics side, there is ethical approach which illustrates the situation pretty well. It is antropocentrism. From this side, Lithuanian government considers themselves (and people) the most important entity in the planet. From an anthropocentric perspective, humankind is seen as separate from nature and superior to it, thus, other entities (animals, plants) are viewed as resources for humans to use. We all understand that our small country would lose large part of its money (GDP), but we care (and are even scared) about the consequences that such greedy government behaviour may bring in the near future. We take into our consideration how our lanscape changes, how blank and empty it becomes, we are worried about animals and plants that lose the space to live and grow... Utility we get from the nature is much larger than happiness that profits to country's budget bring. Such serious concern arised because of contradiction between different ethical approaches of government and the people. Personally, I follow utilitarian ethical theory and support ecocentric approach towards this issue. Nature and its beauty always makes me happy and inspires. Saving woods would create maximum good for maximum living beings - for people, animals and plants. It is always possible to find another ways to contribute to our country, help it to thrive and grow - not by destroying our own home.
