The United States is considered the Land of Immigrants, because it was founded by immigrants and populated by immigrants and their descendants. America has welcomed millions of immigrants. America was built on the idea of the “America Dream” and that anyone from any background can become a citizen and have success with hard work.

As President Reagan stated, “We lead the world because, unique among nations, we draw our people -- our strength -- from every country and every corner of the world. And by doing so we continuously renew and enrich our nation” (WRLA, 2019).

The United States of America is, as President John F. Kennedy called it a “nation of immigrants.” The only native to America is the Native Americans. We can all trace our heritage back to somewhere else. As President Kennedy wrote, “Another way of indicating the importance of immigration to America is to point out that every American who ever lived, with the exception of one group, was either an immigrant himself or a descendant of immigrants” (President Kennedy, 1964).

Key principles of American political culture are liberty, equality, and democracy. Immigrants come to America because of these principals and that we are a land of freedom and opportunities.

As President Kennedy stated on Citizenship day in 1960, “Our Constitution is founded on the principle that all men are equal as citizens, and entitled to the same rights, whether they achieved citizenship by birth, or after coming here as immigrants, seeking to find in America new freedom and new opportunities” (Woolley, 1960).
