Look both ways Jason Reynolds is a book that show a lot about friendship. It shows how friendship can help us. IT shows how we need people by our side. Friendship is important so you have people by your side when you go through things.

Look Both Ways shows friendship in "Water Booger Bears", The "Low Cuts Strike Again", and "Five Things Easier Than Simeon's and Kenzi's Secret Handshake". The stories show that friendship can happen no matter where you live or if you have an illness. For example when it says " For the record Bit, John John, Francy, and Tristen weren't the only free-lunchers, but they were the only free-lunchers with parents who were cancer survivors" (Reynolds 21). This show that the low cuts can all relate to each other. Another example is in "Five Things Easier" is when Kenzi's brother took the blame for Chucky. It says " How his wished his brother, Mason could pick him up in his car Simeon's brother Chucky had stolen almost two years ago. The one Mason took the hit for, went down for" (Reynolds 115). Also in "Five Things Easier" Kenzi and Simeon call each other brothers. Their brothers are friends and Mason even took the blame for Chucky. This shows that friends are always by your side.

TJ is caring one example is when he carried Jasmine's backpack. In "water booger bears" there is evidence that show TJ is caring " "That's what you think," TJ went on as they swapped backpacks. His was light" (Reynolds 4). Another example of TJ being caring is " She could've done it herself, but TJ was concerned about her muscles because she was still recovering of the attack" (Reynold 4-5). In another part of the book in "Five Things Easier" Simeon carries Kenzi in the halls because he is the perfect height for peoples elbows to hit him " " ready?" Simeon asked Kenzi over his shoulder. Kenzi had his arms wrapped around Simeon's neck, tight enough to hold on, but not tight enough to choke him. "Let's do it" Kenzi called back and oof they went" (Reynolds 101). This shows that Simeon cares for Kenzi and doesn't want him to get hit in the eye in the busy hallway.

TJ and Jasmine's friendship flags are a symbol of their friendship. In the story Jason Reynolds says " The floor of his locker was littered with empty snack bags that Jasmine had slid through the door vent between classes over the last two days. Trash... yes. But Jasmine and TJ call them "friendship flags" (Reynolds 3). The "Friendship Flags" shows that friends have things that only they understand. If someone looked at the chip bags they may think that TJ is just messy but Jasmine puts them in there. They don't care they think of it as a token of love.

I think that Jason Reynolds portrays friendship in many ways. For example when he writes about how all the low cuts stick together and how they all had a parent with cancer. I think that this means that no matter what you are going through you can still make friends. Another examples is in "Water Booger Bears" when TJ is still friends with Jasmine even when she has sickle cell anemia. Even when she is different and has attacks TJ is still friends with her. I relate this to when I had challenges and still was able to make friends. Many people go through things and can still make friends and have people they can relate to.
