The research we will collect will focus on Australian data, but this issue can be applied to many different cultures, as the norms of gender socialization transcend geographical boundaries.

Our group chose to focus on gender socialization because it lies at the root of how individuals come to understand themselves and others in relation to gender. It is a process that begins before birth and continues through everyday interactions—with parents, teachers, media, and peers. In today's social climate, where conservative ideologies and "red pill" rhetoric are resurfacing and reinforcing rigid gender norms, it becomes even more urgent to ask: How are these roles taught in the first place? In short, this topic matters because it affects everyone. By unpacking the way gender roles are taught, we can help create a society where people—especially children—are free to become who they are, not who they’re expected to be.
