Scenario #1 by Aris Winger

ou are the Chair of your Department. Students of color have approached you about Faculty Member F. He is a well respected, full professor with 31 years of exemplary service in the department.
“He is being very disrespectful to us. One time he confused one of us for the other and said ‘you all look alike anyway.’ He never calls on us and expects us to fail. “

What do you do?

It's remembering that the issue is hearsay from this student perspective. Sometimes there are cultural differences with faculty members that students don't understand either. For example, as a women in computer science, I was treated as inferior to the men in the classroom and my questions were ignored. When that was happening, it was "acceptable" but today would not be. Not all people have changed their cultural biases. Who is in charge of those things?

I think I would talk to the faculty member and make sure they know how students are perceiving some of the their remarks. Then listen to what they have to say in response. Try talking it through and make it clear that those types of comments can't be tolerated. See how responsive they are and depending on how it goes, maybe refer for some formal training. Talk with students and make sure they know you are listening -- give them your time and ear.

It may not be a ethically or gender motivated comment and more about the general age of the students. After 31 years, is it possible that the way in which people think about others is different than before. 20-30 years ago you could call people "kids" or "sweetie" without it meaning something derogatory.
