In your Discussion section this week you will use the Jigsaw method to study and explain an important scientific study on coral resilience. The Jigsaw method divides up a paper into smaller pieces that students study, comprehend, summarize, and explain to each other to ultimately piece together the entire study.

The paper we are going to study is "Palumbi et al. Science (2014). Mechanisms of reef coral resistance to future climate change." 

Background:
Corals form the foundation of diverse reef ecosystems, but as ocean temperatures rise, corals face increasing stress. Environmental changes may outpace coral evolution. Can corals adapt to tolerate rising temperatures? Here, authors report that corals can adjust their physiological responses rapidly and acclimatize to better withstand warm waters. 

Instructions

In this activity you will form breakout groups; each group will be assigned one figure set (Figure 1 A-D, 2, 3 A-C, and 4) from the paper to study, understand, and summarize. Each breakout group will explain their assigned portion of the paper (Figure) to the rest of the class by adding comments under each heading in their relevant section. Use the resources provided here in this padlet to access the scientific study (paper, supplement to the paper, interactive website with videos). Please decide how you will present your section of the paper to the rest of the class when you go back into the main group.
