Beginning

In France during the time of the French revolution there were five types of governments, but in the beginning it was the General Estates. The General Estates was the division of the Clergy, nobles, and commoners who all got one vote NOT based on population The first estate, also the highest of the estates, made up 1 percent of the population of France and in it was the Church and monarchs. The second estate made up 10 percent of the population of France and was made up of the nobles or basically the rich people. The third estate, also the poorest estate, made up 89 percent of the population and was the only estate struggling to survive in France. The biggest problem with this system was that the first and second estate would always out vote the third estate and leave them struggling plus the first and second estate owned almost all the land in France and left no land for the third estate to use, unless they paid a fee. The General Estate failed due to the obvious unfairness in it, leading to the National Assembly. The National Assembly was another form of government which was representation based on population. In it each estate had an advocate and for the third estate it was a man named Robespierre. During one National Assembly the first and second estate lock the third estate out and don't allow them to enter which results in the third estate creating the Tennis Court Oath. The third estate created the Tennis Court Oath as a way to try to solve their problems peacefully, which was them refusing to leave until King Louis and the other estates listened to them. But in response to this King Louis arrests every protester and locks them up, never listening to them.

The third estate after being ignored decides to stand up and storm the Bastille. This is because of the feeling that they need to arm themselves due to thinking King Louis was attacking their rights. The Bastille was a prison where King Louis held political prisoners and also used it as an armory. Then after the people of the third estate decide to march on the Palace of Versailles where King Louis and Marie Antoinette are staying. They do this because of the price of bread and the belief that Marie Antoinette is hoarding all the wheat. They succeed in marching on the palace and take King Louis and Marie back to Paris so keep an eye on them. This was a reasonable response but it was also not the right thing to do in the situation. After taking the King and Marie back to Paris they once again try at a government that would make everyone happy, the Legislative government. Its purpose was that King Louis would work with the people like a constitutional monarchy, but it doesn't last long. King Louis and Marie Antoinette finally understanding whats going on try to send a message for help to the other monarchs but get caught in the process resulting in them being executed which causes the Legislative government to fail. After the Legislative Government fails one of the leaders of the National Assembly named Robespierre takes over and creates the First Republic. The First Republic was a government where they attempted to select officials without a direct ruler, which created a problem because Robespierre liked the power he had and became corrupt executing all those whose opinions differed from his. This ended up bringing France into the Reign of Terror, a era where a lot of people were executed by the guillotine.

After the Legislative Government fails a new government comes in, the Directory. The Directory was a form of government where an upper and lower house worked together to create laws. The lower house proposed the laws and the upper house got to choose whether or not that law was worthy of being passed. In comes Napoleon Bonaparte, a commander in the army who had ties with Robespierre and Robespierre brother. Napoleon was a genius in military school at the age of 16 and was seen as basically the young Sheldon of the school. In 1799 he staged a coup d'état to overthrow the directory government which worked and he took over. This allowed Napoleon to take over France where he made many political changes through the Napoleonic code. The Napoleonic code made men the head of the house as the strongest person there and took away any individual rights women had. Napoleon also allowed something that France never had before, freedom of religion so now the Catholics and Protestants wouldn't argue as much anymore. But Napoleon then faces his downfall after trying to invade Russia in the winter and ultimately his reign ends after it. Napoleon was one of the greatest Emperors of France and the legacy he left behind affected France greatly. He made sure that France dominated the continent of Europe helping them in the long run with other countries in Europe.
