Highlights of TP's humble beginning before the big move

To mark the end of the Big Move and a fresh start at the new campus, an 18km relay from Grange Road Campus to the new campus in Tampines was held on 17 September. Temasek Polytechnic officially opens the doors to its 30-hectare new campus on 18 September.

The Polytechnic receives accreditation for its staff training programme from the Staff and Educational Development Association, a first for a higher education institution outside the UK.

The Centre for Character Education is set up with the aim of developing graduates who will bring positive changes to the workplace and families. In 2011, the centre was renamed as Centre for Character & Leadership Education.

Temasek Polytechnic receives the Family Friendly Firm Award, the first and only educational institution to achieve this commendation.

Temasek Polytechnic receives the Enterprise Challenge Award to develop a Problem-Based Learning Education model for Singapore, a first for an educational institution.

The Temasek Applied Science School becomes the fifth academic school following a spilt from the Temasek IT and Applied Science School.

Temasek Polytechnic is awarded the ISO9001:1994 certification for the design and provision of its full-time diploma courses.

The Interdisciplinary and General Studies Department is established to deliver cross disciplinary subjects that will broaden students’ outlook beyond diploma specialisation.

The Polytechnic is awarded the ISO14001 certification for its environmental management systems.

Mr Boo Kheng Hua is appointed Principal/CEO of Temasek Polytechnic.

The Flexible Academic System for Temasek (FAST) is introduced in the academic year 2002/3. The system will provide a broad-based flexible education for students by allowing them to choose from core subjects, diploma subjects and cross-disciplinary subjects.

The Polytechnic receives the SAF Award for Employers from the Deputy Prime Minister, Dr Tony Tan, for its support of and contribution to defence activities.

The Digital Library Portal, SPARK, is officially launched. The portal is powered by a federated search engine that enables students and staff to access online information and learning resources anytime, anywhere.

Launch of the first cookbook Cooking Up A Dream. The book features a series of 24 original recipes, including prize winners, created by the Temasek Polytechnic students.

The Polytechnic is the first institution to use NEWater for its air-conditioning cooling towers.

The Temperature Badge is developed by a group of Engineering School staff during the peak of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) outbreak.

Temasek Polytechnic successfully converts to the ISO9001:2000 standard for the design and delivery of its full-time diplomas.

The Polytechnic’s reputation for culinary education and training is affirmed with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the prestigious Culinary Institute of America (CIA). Two chef certification courses will be offered in August 2004.

The Learning Academy is set up to improve staff competencies and build a culture of learning and innovation.

The Tourism Academy @ Sentosa (TAS) opens its doors to students. A collaboration between the Temasek Polytechnic and the Sentosa Leisure Group, TAS will operate Asia’s first regional hospitality, service and tourism campus on a resort island.

Temasek Polytechnic officially adopts the Bedok Reservoir as part of a Public Utilities Board (PUB) programme to raise public awareness of the need to keep our water resources clean.

15th anniversary celebrations culminate in the performance of Moon People. The musical is scripted, directed and performed by Temasek Polytechnic staff and students. The Guest of Honour for the Gala performance is the Minister for Education, Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam.

Temasek Polytechnic is named Best Host for International Students Studying in Singapore at the inaugural Singapore Education Awards organised by the Singapore Tourism Board.

The Friendship Order is conferred on the Polytechnic by the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam for contributions to human resource training in Vietnam and the development of friendship between the two countries. The Friendship Order is Vietnam’s highest award in the area of International Relations.

Establishment of Hereafter, the region’s first fully-equipped high definition (HD) post-production facility. Using industry-standard equipment and editing software, it will allow students to do everything from filming to editing in HD format.

Temasek Polytechnic offers the Diploma in Veterinary Technology, a first for a local tertiary institution.

The Temasek Culinary Academy is officially launched by Mr Gan Kim Yong, Minister of State for Education. The $5.5 million complex houses a café, full-service restaurant, wine tasting studio, culinary theatre and a state-of- the-art training kitchen.
