One day 14 year old Emmett Till was in Money, Mississippi visiting his relatives. On August 25, 1955 he went to a grocery store. There he met a woman by the name of Carolyn Bryant whom was a cashier at the store and accused Emmett Till of whistling at her . Four days later, Bryant's husband and his brother went to the house where Till was staying. They kidnapped him, took him to a barn where they beat him, gouged out one of his eyes, and shot him in the head. He was found three days later in a nearby river. The men were tried for murder but were cleared by an all white jury.

Emmett Louis Till was an African-American boy born in Chicago on July 25, 1941. He grew up in a middle-class African-American neighborhood raised by his mother. Till's mother, Mamie Till, was an exceptional woman who was triumphant through all the adversity black women of the 1920's and 30's faced. She was the first black student to make honor roll at her predominantly white high school and the 4th black student to graduate at that high school.
His father was a private in the United States army during WWII. Till never knew his father and received word years later he was executed for willful misconduct during his service in Italy. Emmett Till was known for being a boy full of spirit, beautiful energy, and extremely humorous. He had a slight stutter from suffering from polio at the age of 5. With his mom working full time and Emmett always being the man of the house, he took on all household responsibilities from cooking to cleaning and doing anything he could to help his mother. Till's decision to go to Mississippi was one his mom was originally on the fence about. He insisted on going to spend time with his cousins, a decision that would have an unfortunate, horrible outcome for himself and his family. The murder of Emmett Till is one that has had a profound impact on American History.

Emmett Till's murder and open casket funeral electrified the civil rights movement which was at the peak of emerging at the time. Unfortunate news arrived in January 2017 when Timothy Tyson, author and research scholar at Duke University, revealed that in a 2007 interview Carolyn Bryant did admit to him that she had lied about Till making advances toward her. Following that news breaking out, the Justice Department decided to reopen an investigation into Till's murder but unfortuantely justice is too lat for not only Emmett Till but his family and all others who have been a victim to it.

Dominique Christina's, “For Emmett Till” is an extremely moving piece. The words spoken, story told, and pain in the readers voice were unsettling but also so moving. The talk of Emmett Till’s life and what it should have still been before his murder was something that greatly resonated with me. Throughout the poem as a reader I felt the injustice of the situation and so sorrowful for Emmett Till. The way his characteristics were described were truly brought to life through Dominique's words and performance. I was able to imagine certain things and more importantly, feel the pain in Dominique's voice. I found the whole piece to be extremely moving and I really felt something when listening.

I found it really interesting how this poem was created and published this year. This shows that Emmett Till's story is still alive and being heard across America today, all these years later.

I saw "For Emmett Till" to really bring a terrible truth and put a face to the murders and lynchings in the South. The poem gave a real and raw description for us readers to understand how horrible this terrible reality was and try to understand how it impacted those connected to these poor victims. Emmett Till's case reopening and writers still bringing life to his story show the immense weight and impact this event had and continues to have.

This article provides the raw history behind lynchings and provides describes of what they were, how they happened, and why they happened. The fact that at one point in the history of this country this was done at the hands of white Americans is truly disgusting, inhuman, and saddens me so deeply.
