Different from past culture to now.......
In the spring of 2013 I attempted 15 credit hours for spring, at the time I was a single mother of two children who were 6 and 11 years old. In my previous experience with San Juan College I did horrible with education. I was one of those students who took full advantage of financial aid then would disappear as soon as the Pell grant and loans were given to students. In 2013 I was in financial debt with my student loans which coincidently hindered my educational goal I had set for myself and my little family. Moving to Albuquerque for an education that was in limbo was a hard reality. At my previous college in Albuquerque and San Juan College in the early 2000’s I felt like the educators did not expect students to attend class regularly nor to complete all the assignments as well. In the bigger city it seemed more like I was just another student attending classes. The energy and attitude seemed to be “well she paid for her education, its up to her if she wants to make the most of it”. This has changed tremendously for San Juan College which is amazing! I feel like the educators care more deeply about the success a student can achieve. I fully take advantage of any extra credit I can get my hands on, which always comes with a deeper learning on the various topics and issues that are being discussed. The educators always seem to take note who is actively participating as well.

Reflecting on the end of this semester has been bittersweet. I have enjoyed my professor's knowledge that was shared and those who eagerly were learning. The professors showed qualities on staying humble, especially with those who weren't fast to understand. The hustle of making education a priority and everyday life will forever be embedded in my mind. I'm sad I wont see such beautiful spirits everyday but also thankful.

Obtaining interviews and reliable academic sources was the challenge. Presenting on behalf of a nation who has prided themselves in their culture was taken in a delicate matter yet it was fun!

Otter looks for an opportunity to do as much as he can but be accessible to his family. He manages priority and sometimes does homework the day before its due which in his terms is “living on the edge”. Otter also feels like he could find a better way to manage his time and right now he believes it is currently working but “if it comes to the point that it affects my school work, I will have to change it” is what his mind frame is. Currently Otter has classes Tuesday and Thursday’s, so immediately after class he drives home and figures out what to do when he immediately gets home and what work to do while he stayed at the college all day on Wednesday and Friday’s. He designates a day on the weekend to continue to do the work at a comfortable pace that he is happy with.

Growing up I was a victim and I believe it has been a bad habit that I cant shake off. My goal is to discard the bad habit and immediately seek the creator language. For example, when I couldn’t get the proper classes I wanted this semester, I was given options I did not like. I immediately went into the advisor's to protest and get upset but told myself to give them a chance to explain. When they explained why I had to take specific courses especially this one, I was so upset but I left trying to not outburst or be to upset. I took some time to think about it and thought I am lucky I even get a second chance at my education, I need to see where I am at and focus on now, there is nothing I can do but follow the proper guidelines and work for the A’s as well.

I was unable to attend San Juan College after a long year suspension and prior to that a academic probation sentence. I had quit my job at the hospital to tackle school full time so I put myself out there to appeal and go into detail as to why I was not successful. That amount of sincerity and honesty was hard but I allowed myself to be vulnerable with my actions yet also be OK with the outcome that my appeal may be denied. When I received the email I was at three rivers restaurant dining. While I got this news I immediately felt tears of happiness and wanted to go hug everyone which is very unusual for me. I felt freedom from letting that hardship out and be ok. I rejoiced even more when I was able to register and prove to myself that I could succeed if I put my mind and heart into it.

Disneyland will always be a part of our lives with my 4 yr old and his autism. Its his favorite place in the world so to be able to continue to provide that will help relieve stress as well. Powwow dancing is a huge part of my core in who I am as an Indegenous woman and participating and evolving into a older woman who carries the teachings will also help my growth mindset.
